I love Maureen Lee. She's one of my favourite authors. And she didn't let me down with this book.

This is the story of Amy and her daughter, Pearl. In 1951 Amy went to prison for killing her husband, Barney. In 1971, she was released, having not seen her daughter for the 20 years she was in prison.

This is a dual time-narrative story, told in alternating chapters. One story is that of Amy and how she met Barney, her life during the war, and what happened when Barney came home from the conflict. The other story is that of Pearl, a school teacher in 1971, preparing to meet her mother again.

This is a beautifully written saga. As always, Liverpool plays a big part in the story, and so does family life. Maureen Lee portrays both so well, and she always manages to craft a great story that keeps me riveted from start to finish. Her books are so easy to read, I never want to put them down, and I always care for the characters.

Yet another triumph for this author, and I'm already looking forward to reading another of her books. ( )

I really did enjoy this book. Told in chapters going back and forth between 1939 and 1971, it kept me engrossed.
