( ) *massive sigh* this book was ridiculous! Sexshy and fun but still absolutely ridiculous. I initially wanted to give the book one star but I honestly couldn't put it down. It was quite silly but I could clearly tell that Lucie Whitehouse learned from her mistakes, as her other two novels (which I adored) were beautifully crafted. I despised pretty much all of the characters, at times it was like a telenovela and the number of times I had to read the word 'primal', my god. It was just a dark, dark book with little payoff. Don't recommend sadly :( Joanna and her friends spend time together at Stoneborough Manor which has been inherited by Lucas. Friendships are tested one summer when secrets escalate This book is said to be like Rebecca ( couldn't see it myself ) and The Secret History ( never read so couldn't say ). I liked the story for most of the book. I really didn't enjoy the ending or what happened. Reading the book for me was like watching a film all the way through just to see what is going to happen then left let down. The story has a group of so called friends, some of them not really very nice to each other. The characters themselves are not really likeable at all and at times quite irritating. The plot itself was quite engrossing but lost it's way towards the end. This book didn't turn out to be what I was expecting so a little disappointed with the book overall. The beginning of the story showed some promise, but as things progressed, it started to sound more like a poorly written soap opera than a gothic tale. Lucas is unbearable in his self-absorbed drama, and the motivations behind many of the characters' decisions seemed muddled and confused. I was also a bit uncomfortable with the unhealthy relationships and the emotional abuse that the narrator, Jo, continually excuses or takes the blame for, especially revolving around Lucas. I found them all despicable and not even in a way that I really cared what happened to any of them. And the ending.. Really?! I will never get those hours back. ei arvosteluja | lisää arvostelu

'Even now I can remember the first time I saw the house as clearly as if there were a video of it playing in my head.' Lucas, Danny, Michael, Rachel, Martha and Jo met as undergraduates at Oxford University and have been a tight-knit group of friends ever since. The novel opens on New Year's Eve as, now in their late-twenties, they arrive at Stoneborough Manor, a stately pile that Lucas has inherited after the suicide of his art-dealer uncle. Best friends since university, Lucas and Jo have lusted after each other for years and finally risk their friendship to begin a relationship but Lucas is haunted by the deaths of his parents and uncle and becomes obsessed by cinefilms of them at Stoneborough twenty years earlier. Within the claustrophobic confines of the house over a hot, decadent summer, sexual tensions escalate, shattering the group's friendship and changing all their lives irrevocably.
