Here is the novel that will be forever considered a triumph of the imagination. Set on the desert planet Arrakis, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, who would become the mysterious man known as Muad'Dib. He would avenge the traitorous plot against his noble family-and would bring to fruition humankind's most ancient and unattainable dream. A stunning blend of adventure and mysticism, environmentalism and politics, Dune won the first Nebula Award, shared the Hugo Award, and formed the basis of what it undoubtedly the grandest epic in science fiction.… (lisätietoja)

corporate_clone: It is difficult not to compare Dune and Hyperion, even though both series have major differences in terms of tone, style and philosophy. Those are two long, epic, elaborate and very ambitious sci-fi masterpieces where religion plays a key role. I would highly recommend the fans of one to check out the other.… (lisätietoja)

I read the ‘Dune’ trilogy as a young teenager without knowing what to expect (before it obtained the level of fandom it now enjoys); it was one of the few great stories which helped establish my initial reading addiction. I immediately identified with the main protagonist, Paul Atreides, as he struggled to overcome tremendous adversity to reach his destiny ... his was the traditional ‘Hero’s Journey’ that forms the main plotline of the story. The most interesting aspect at this time was Paul’s Mentat (human computer) training ... which would morph into a pseudo-transhuman philosophy popularized by one of my favorite TV characters – Mr. Spock.

But there is more ... I reread Dune as a young (and better read) adult and I really appreciated that the author didn’t feel the need to spoon-feed the reader; he trusts us enough to figure it all out (with difficulty perhaps, but successful none-the-less). I started to use story elements to explore ideas outside of Dune ... such as the curious luddite aversion to [some] technology. This brought a new understanding of the power of creation and the responsibility of the creator. I grew fascinated by the very convincing religious concepts within the messianic/eugenic sub-plots, leading me toward further study (and acceptance of) of other religions (specifically Islam and Zen) and comparative mythology (popularized by Dr. Joseph Campbell). I even looked at the formation of the Freman society by the harsh conditions of the desert as a mini-Darwinian theme that would be duplicated in many of the Sci-Fi/Fantasy books I read after.

Every time I reread ‘Dune’ I find more to think about: ethics, politics, ecology, fanaticism, addiction, technology, etc. Frank Herbert has built a complex and enduring world which survives quite well outside his original stories; it is this world that inexorably pulls me into many of the lesser quality stories that continues to fill out Herbert’s universe based upon his surviving notes. Every time I come back to this world, I like it more then before.

This was fun to read, somehow slow and fast at the same time. there's a lot I liked about it which is why it's 4 stars, I liked the worldbuilding (sometimes, when it wasnt just recycled orientalism for white people), I liked how it rejected the hero journey , i like how it was basically space godfather... the ending made me feel really bad though, he should have married Chani, I felt really bad for her and for Jessica too because the whole book was just gendery bullshit, i am just sick of reading about men by men for men, and I know some of it was supposed to be critical of patriarchy but it made me just feel so icky. I hated paul and I think that Timothee will play him perfectly in this new movie because he plays the bratty disdainful trust fund kid really well.

Also I will say I was really glad there was a glossary in this book. I like fantasy books where it doesn't give exposition upfront and reveals it gradually, but the depth of it in DUNE was so much that I kind of needed a glossary. ( )

Arrakis: un planeta que es un desierto, donde el gua es el bien mas preciado, donde llorar a los muertos es el símbolo máximo de prodigalidad.

Spring 2020 (April - Sarah's BookClub for May);

I wanted to like this book so much more than I ended up liking this book. I should have taken it as a sign, when the first time I picked it up a few months ago, I read through a few chapters (yes, all the way past the test & The Fear Speech) and then put it down because I couldn't get into it.

The next time I came back to it (post-reading all of Grishaverse in 26 days), I settled down to it as part of a plan to start knocking out some of my book club books early to stay on top of everything I'm reading now, especially with summer read plans rolling in shortly. The second time I picked this book up things went a lot better for about the first half/two-thirds. Once I let go of it being anything I expected I really got into the political building of the background worlds, the universe, ties between houses.

Sadly, that all started to bit by bit by bit vanish once we absconded to the desert amid a river of blood. It got even worse when we slid right over that 3 year gap without any notice until part way into that chapter. I didn't hate the book, or the ending, but I didn't particularly end up liking the book itself or any specific character. I probably looked forward to the epitaphs between the chapters the most. ( )

Dune........ Oh boy. I actually really didn't enjoy this very much. Not until the early 300's anyway.
I'm not going to give you the story outline, if you haven't read it by now, there's a movie coming out & personally I think that would be a much better option.
There is so much political crap, back stabbing & back biting going on I didn't even start to enjoy the story until the early 300's when the Fremen action started to amp up. And personally, I thought the Fremen takeover was a bit too neat & tidy.
I found it really hard to relate to any of the characters, especially Paul at the end (I thought he was a real dickhead at the end of the book). The only character I really related to was Chani who we didn't really get to know. The main characters were all pretty remote (which in the Harkonen's case was a good thing but.....)
I didn't actually make the connection until I read a few other reviews cos I was a bit nervous about putting all this down since it is so popular in it's genre but Herbert did kinda portray Paul as a 'messiah'. Either Herbert wasn't a Christian or he was a catholic because I can say with a whole lot of certainty that the actual Messiah is waaaay less of a self important dickhead.
So yeah, I basically read it because I was curious, now I'm done.

Why is Blanch’s influence on Dune worth recognizing? Celebrating Blanch is not a means to discredit Herbert, whose imaginative novel transcends the sum of its influences. But Dune remains massively popular while The Sabres of Paradise languishes in relative obscurity, and renewed public interest in Blanch’s forgotten history would be a welcome development.

Isaac Asimov’s Foundation trilogy was famously inspired by Edward Gibbon’s Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. J. R. R. Tolkien’s background in medieval languages helped shape the mythology of Middle Earth. Frank Herbert’s Dune is no different, and rediscovering one of the book’s most significant influences is a rewarding experience.

One of the monuments of modern science fiction.

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

The thing the ecologically illiterate don't realize about an ecosystem is that it's a system. A system! A system maintains a certain fluid stability that can be destroyed by a misstep in just one niche. A system has order, a flowing from point to point. If something dams the flow, order collapses. The untrained miss the collapse until too late. That's why the highest function of ecology is the understanding of consequences.
