Here is the novel that will be forever considered a triumph of the imagination. Set on the desert planet Arrakis, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, who would become the mysterious man known as Muad'Dib. He would avenge the traitorous plot against his noble family-and would bring to fruition humankind's most ancient and unattainable dream. A stunning blend of adventure and mysticism, environmentalism and politics, Dune won the first Nebula Award, shared the Hugo Award, and formed the basis of what it undoubtedly the grandest epic in science fiction.… (lisätietoja)

JonTheTerrible: The pace of these books are similar as well as the topics they cover: society and government. The science plays only a small role in both books but is present enough to successfully build the worlds in which the characters inhabit.

    Hyperion (tekijä: Dan Simmons) (corporate_clone)
corporate_clone: It is difficult not to compare Dune and Hyperion, even though both series have major differences in terms of tone, style and philosophy. Those are two long, epic, elaborate and very ambitious sci-fi masterpieces where religion plays a key role. I would highly recommend the fans of one to check out the other.… (lisätietoja)

corporate_clone: Both books are a subtle blend of science fiction and fantasy while being truly epic stories. Although Dune remains a superior literary achievement in my view, Silverberg's Majipoor series is a credible alternative.

"I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration".

What can I say about Dune that hasn't been said before?

Well, I read it in Portuguese and I own a brand new edition. It's funny that I usually know what to say about a book I didn't like, and I can't find the right words to say about those I really like. So... I really love this book :P

I highly recommend for science fiction and fantasy fans!

I think this part of the "To Tame a Land" a Iron Maiden’s song is a good synopsis:

He is the king of all the land
In the Kingdom of the sands
Of a time tomorrow
He rules the sandworms and the Fremen
In a land amongst the stars
Of an age tomorrow
He is destined to be a King
He rules over every thing
In the land called planet Dune
Body water is your life
And without it you would die
In the desert the planet Dune

Without a stillsuit you would fry
On the sands so hot and dry
In a world called Arakis
It is a land that's rich in spice
The sandriders and the ‘mice'
That they call the ‘Muad'Dib'
He is the Kwizatz Haderach
He is born of Caladan
And will take the Gorn Jabbar
He has the power to foresee
Or to look into the past
He's the ruler of the stars ( )

I had read this many years ago and dug it (I liked the follow-up books less, I believe). This time around, I read aloud to my wife and 12-year-old son (strategically glossing over a couple of little things I didn't really want to read to him), and we all enjoyed it a lot. It's a pretty easy read, and the world building, ecology, and plots within plots are pretty neat. The ornithopters are stupid, though. ( )

“Dune” by Frank Herbert. A stunning soft-science fiction story anyone could like, even if you don’t typically enjoy sci-fi. The Dune saga was cited in 2003 as the world’s best selling science-fiction novel and I now know why.

“Soft” sci-fi means that the softer sciences are explored in this novel (social, psychology, anthropology, religion) rather than the hard sciences (physics, astronomy, engineering, etc.). Dune explores the lives of those living on the desert planet Arrakis, and those that want to rule it, and plunder it’s precious resource: Spice aka melange, a drug, which gives the user the power of foresight. If you typically shy away from sci-fi, give this one a shot because I think you will appreciate it.

5/5 rating, easy. I instantly fell in love with the intelligent characters of the Atreides family: Paul (our main man), Lady Jessica (the most badass concubine I’ve ever read about), and Aria (who I NEED to read more about in Dune #2). The 3rd person omniscient narration pulls us deep into the characters decision-making, fears, and predictions moment by moment. There are mantras and flowery prose galore, and while this book was written in 1965 the ideas are unaging. THey focus on the nature of things, of people, of cultures.

“The proximity of a desirable thing tempts one to overindulgence. On that path lies danger.”

“What do you despise? By this are you truly known.”

“A killer with the manners of a rabbit—this is the most dangerous kind.”

“He who can destroy a thing has real control of it.”

“I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.”

I definitely will be reading the second book in the saga eventually, but until then, I’m going to check out David Lynch’s 1984 movie adaptation, and wait patiently for the newest adaptation by Denis Villeneuve on the big screen October 1st. ( )

One of my favorite non-hard-sf sci fi novels; I actually liked the David Lynch movie when I first saw it in the 80s, but somehow hadn’t actually read the book until now (I think). Unfortunately what I’ve heard is that most of the sequels just get worse, so it probably is only worth reading this book. ( )

Why is Blanch’s influence on Dune worth recognizing? Celebrating Blanch is not a means to discredit Herbert, whose imaginative novel transcends the sum of its influences. But Dune remains massively popular while The Sabres of Paradise languishes in relative obscurity, and renewed public interest in Blanch’s forgotten history would be a welcome development.

Isaac Asimov’s Foundation trilogy was famously inspired by Edward Gibbon’s Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. J. R. R. Tolkien’s background in medieval languages helped shape the mythology of Middle Earth. Frank Herbert’s Dune is no different, and rediscovering one of the book’s most significant influences is a rewarding experience.

One of the monuments of modern science fiction.

Deep in the human unconscious is a pervasive need for a logical universe that makes sense. But the real universe is always one step beyond logic.
Let us not rail about justice as long as we have arms and the freedom to use them.
The thing the ecologically illiterate don't realize about an ecosystem is that it's a system. A system! A system maintains a certain fluid stability that can be destroyed by a misstep in just one niche. A system has order, a flowing from point to point. If something dams the flow, order collapses. The untrained miss the collapse until too late. That's why the highest function of ecology is the understanding of consequences.
