Another wonderful book by Grace (my third read of hers), it deals with what are becoming familiar themes, such as loss, disinheritance, identity and family, set within the context of a Maori clan. It is the story of three cousins, all born to specific destinies, and each of whom must struggle with their background and identity before deciding whether to accept their fates. It contains typical Grace motifs, such as multiple narrators observing from unusual perspectives, including the dead twin of one of the cousins. Grace fleshes her characters beautifully, and seamlessly blends weighty issues of politics and history with more down to earth stories of family and love. Readers uninitiated into aspects of Maori culture could perhaps benefit from a glossary, but don't let that put you off. This is a very good book. ei arvosteluja | lisää arvostelu
Mata, Makareta, and Missy, three Maori cousins, once shared a magical childhood moment. They have since followed separate and very different paths, yet their struggles offer insightful glimpses into the lives of contemporary New Zealand women. Patricia Grace's keen eye records the psychological, cultural, and political circumstances that color and circumscribe their worlds in this engaging, compassionate story.
