The cover blurb described this as "disturbing", which was a masterful understatement. I made it better than halfway (no page numbering) but after numerous rapes, murders, suicides and executions I couldn't take any more. All of the foregoing initiated by djinn - this book should've been subtitles "Jinn Gone Wild". Dreaming of genies here was a real nightmare. The writing (and translation) was very good, and I suspect I may have missed some underlying social commentary due to a lack of familiarity, but honestly, this just ain't my cup of tea. ( )

Questo romanzo potrebbe essere definito una continuazione de "Le mille e una notte": le atmosfere fiabesche sono le stesse, ma l'autore ha compiuto una massiccia opera di modernizzazione approfondendo sia le tematiche che la psicologia dei personaggi; il risultato è un'opera che non è più solo un racconto fantastico sul bene e il male, ma anche un'allegoria sul potere, la corruzione e la redenzione. Gli intenti del libro sono quindi ambiziosi, ma secondo me sono stati raggiunti solo in parte. Questo perchè uno dei motivi che rendono indimenticabile "Le mille e una notte" è proprio il non avere alcuna pretesa di realismo: siamo trasportati nel reame dell'immaginario e non ci poniamo troppe domande. Qui invece l'autore ha conservato intatta la magia delle trame e delle ambientazioni originali, inserendovi però dei personaggi complessi e tridimensionali. Questo contrasto appesantisce la narrazione, perchè sminuisce l'elemento fantastico e crea un effetto straniante che non permette mai un vero coinvolgimento: vedere i protagonisti che nel mezzo delle più mirabolanti avventure si perdono in dissertazioni filosofiche e spirituali spiazza il lettore e fa perdere interesse, o almeno per me è stato così. Gran parte della colpa va però attribuita allo stile, che per quanto sia suggestivo è anche molto confusionario: spesso durante i dialoghi non si riesce a capire quale personaggio stia parlando, e certe frasi non legano le une con le altre. Ho letto in giro che potrebbe essere un problema di traduzione, ma anche se fosse vero io giudico quel che leggo e lo stile così com'è è davvero poco fluido.
Considero questo romanzo un'occasione mancata: ci sono tanti buoni spunti che Mahfuz non è riuscito a sviluppare appieno, forse troppi. E' come se non fosse riuscito a mettere a fuoco l'obiettivo dell'opera, che non è abbastanza visonaria e fantasiosa per essere una fiaba ma non ha neanche il rigore e la profondità di un trattato filosofico. Naguib Mahfouz's Arabian Nights and Days was a clever idea; a continuation from King Shahryar's cruel disposition and Shehrazad's storytelling.

But there is always a big risk involved in the project of writing a sequel to a classic: the danger lies in the expectations of the readers. The content of Arabian Nights and Days by Mahfouz lacks the one quality that made the classic that was Arabians Nights, one of the most magical, mystical and elevating books of my childhood: it doesn't evoke those macabre, violent or simply sensuous images that I remember of the classic. We don't come close to the flitting of pages of the Sage Duban, of the latter's "talking head", of the monochrome fish in the desolate enchanted city that are transformed into ghoulish creatures...

Weaving stories from the lives of all characters, both major and minor, was an adaptation from the classic that is Arabian Nights, but again, that was not particularly ingenious.

I felt that the ending was also quite typical: this hackneyed comment on the evanescence of the truth is commonly seen in novels, poems etc. Again therefore, I didn't think much of that.

I hope I come across better works by him. It would be a shame if I don't, because I've heard so much about him, and if it's once more a story of "much ado about nothing", then it would cast a very dark shadow on the current state of literature -- a conclusion/observation that the clear-sighted seem to make, but which I have been resisting for a long time. ( )
