Whoa this was not at all what I was expecting but I’m very pleasantly surprised by this one. When I hear people are missing I automatically assume it’s the kids so it was a nice like twist in this one when it wasn’t the kids missing after all. And I had cults!! That’s all I can ask for out of YA horror thrillers. This was a fun read. ( )

Fear Street # 5

It only took four books for 'Fear Street' to have it's first over-the-top cheeseball cover. Look at those two teens with attitude for a second. Meet Cara and Mark Burroughs. What is her pose about? She's about to 'Walk Like an Egyptian'. Is that going to impress the ominous shadow? Mark's plan seems to be bargaining. He's going to give the shadow his sister and be able to walk away and never tell anybody about what he saw. The fashion is perfect. I have nothing to say about the fashion.

'Missing' opens with Cara musing to herself about her irresponsible parents while throwing a big party in their new house on Fear Street. Her parent's work involves installing computer systems and requires moving to different cities. Mark is better at making friends and is currently tonsils-deep in his new girlfriend Gena Rawlings. Cara doesn't see the point of getting close with people since she'll have to say goodbye with them before any real rapport is developed. Cara's parents disagree with her. As soon as the family reaches a new town, the elder Burroughs - who are actually not that young and, uh, 'hip' - sign up for clubs, teams and organizations in a frenzy to get out of the house. Mark thinks this is normal. Cara suspects her parents of not liking their children very much.

I like Cara, she's got spunk, even if she isn't too bright. Unfortunately Mark, who shares some of the narrator duties, is worse in the brains department.

Anyway, there's a party. Old stand-bys Lisa and Cory are arguing at this party and a few other names are dropped from the 'New Girl' cast. Not Deschanel's, the Stine book. You knew that. The music is loud and there are even hints that alcohol is going on which makes Cara nervous when she answers the doorbell to find a man with a badge on her stoop. He claims he's a detective investigating a burglary in the area and is intrigued when Cara says her parents haven't come home yet. He gives her a card and says nothing about the unsupervised hullaballoo inside the house.

This is before Cara and Mark even think anything is wrong. Their parents could be home any minute, but they aren't too concerned about the mess. Mark and Cara are briefly spooked by noises upstairs after the party ends, but it's only their mother's cousin Roger who lives in the attic. Apparently the Burroughs always have male boarders. That's totally a thing that professional middle class families do. Roger is described as 'handsome' but 'weird'. He tends to creep around the house a lot and gets on the sibling's nerves.

Time passes and there's still no sign of Mr and Mrs. Burroughs. These people are unorthodox, but the latchkey kids are beginning to get nervous. Cara is such a nervous wreck that when she peeks into her parent's room for some clue as to where they went she shrieks at the unmade bed. What is disturbing is more creepy behavior from Roger and the discovery of a ceramic monkey's skull with rhinestone eyes that "radiate evil". The detective starts investigating, but makes no move to provide the minors with any assistance. The phone keeps going dead and they can't find people at their parent's work who'll admit their parents were ever there. Worst of all, Gena breaks up with Mark!

'Missing' is a decent thriller if you overlook a few dubious leaps of logic on the part of the characters. We've got the government involved, a white supremacy group (that's what it is, I don't care that they don't specify it), packs of wolves rumored to be running through the Fear Street Woods, and more monkey skulls than in your wildest dreams.

This was better than I thought it was going to be. The synopsis sounded super boring, but I decided to read the Fear Street books in order and this one was up next.

It was bonkers, but not over the top. For the most part it wrapped up nicely with no loose ends. And it was an enjoyable ride that kept me guessing. ( )

Possible Spoiler Alert:

Okay, how dumb do these two kids have to be? Instead of calling the police to let them know about our parents, let's tell some random detective who just showed up at our house. So there was an explanation for everything which made sense in the end- well, sort of. ( )
