David Livingstone in 1859 found slavery, tribal wars, famine, and a very different disease situation from Europe. Tuberculosis, common then in Europe was not found in Africans. Epidemics of leprosy, smallpox, sleeping sicknes, malaria, tetanus, typhoid, bubonic plague, and tick borne fever were encountered by courageous doctors in Nyasaland for many decades, when they had few effective drugs. This book records the struggles of these medical pioneers and their wives, often in their own words. Many stayed for 40 -50 years, and gradually built up medical services across Malawi. The striking changes in the patterns of diseases, including AIDS, over many years are described in fascinating detail. The book is fully illustrated and set in this beautiful country of Lakes and Mountains. Kirjastojen kuvailuja ei löytynyt. |
