Lawrence Ellswoth's new translations (2018) of the classic provides a humorous and fast moving telling, though except for the multiple demonstrations of their, when not otherwise required for the plot, exemplary fighting skills, I found the virtues of the characters entirely show rather than tell. The titular 3 drink, eat, fritter and gamble away any funds that enter their hands - or their friends' hands - and treat woman as sources of funds or outlets of momentary exuberance. D'Artagnan seems a bit more judicious as to funds on his own, but his behavior to Kitty and even Milady is that of a complete cad. Ah, well, it is full of swash and buckle and derring-do. ( )

De drie musketiers wordt beschouwd als een van de grootste avonturenromans ooit geschreven en is een erkende klassieker. Het verhaal over de jonge Gasconjer d’Artagnan en de legendarische musketiers Athos, Porthos en Aramis speelt zich af in het Frankrijk van ruwweg 1625 tot 1628 ten tijde van Lodewijk XIII. Alexandre Dumas père (1802-1870) liet zich voor deze historische roman inspireren door de Mémoires de M. d’Artagnan (1700) door Courtilz de Sandras (1644-1712) dat hij bij toeval tegenkwam in de bibliotheek van Marseille. Toen het verhaal in 1844 als feuilleton in de Parijse krant Le Siècle verscheen was het meteen een enorm succes. Deze archetypische swashbuckler barst dan ook uit zijn voegen van de spanning, (romantische) intriges en heroïek. In hetzelfde jaar verscheen de roman in boekvorm, waarna herdruk op herdruk volgde. Het boek is in ruim honderd talen verschenen en talloze malen verfilmd. Het verhaal is zo beroemd dat zelfs als mensen het niet hebben gelezen ze De drie musketiers kennen. De meeste mensen weten warempel zelfs dat d'Artagnan, de belangrijkste held van het boek, niet een van de drie musketiers is. En wie kent niet het devies van het viertal: Eén voor allen, allen voor één!
