Exploring and testing André’s new inventions are what drives their days, although Andre’s the brave one with Jules usually watching on the sidelines. When André’s father dies in a shipbuilding accident, he takes off on an adventure of his own while Jules stays at home, goes to school, and prepares himself to enter into the family business with his father. Jules always dreamed of being a writer, and having his own adventures like Andre, but he has trouble finding his writing stride. And his writing income is almost as non-existent as his adventurous lifestyle. But when he starts writing about André’s adventures, he finds worlds previously unknown to him are now wide open. Captain Nemo is a fun imagining of where all of Jules Verne’s tales come from --- 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Journey to the Center of the Earth, Around the World in 80 Days, to name a few. Yes, some of it is slightly unbelievable but so are Verne’s tales so I was willing to drift out of reality for this one. There is a love story here as well but it fits nicely in the background without feeling too intrusive. Honestly, I say that because I’m not one for mixing too much romance with my science fiction and fantasy. I agree it has a place but I prefer it fit with the story and not feel tacked on. Titan Books pitched this one to me around the time I was reading 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and I jumped at the chance to read it. I’m glad I had at least a small knowledge of Verne’s writing before reading this one too as Anderson does dig deep on some of his adventures. While I’m familiar with Verne’s books, I’m still working on reading most of them and this book made me want to continue. Anderson is an author I’ve heard of but haven’t read. I think I now want to take a look at a few of his books though --- I found this one entertaining and fun and I hope that’s the kind of author he is overall. He obviously has a good knowledge and appreciation of Verne’s work. He captures the adventurous writing style and keeps the pace going throughout. And even at certain points where you know where the story is going, you want to keep reading to see Anderson’s take on it. A few scenes from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea come to mind here. It’s an homage that works well. If you’re looking for something fun, this one was good. ei arvosteluja | lisää arvostelu
Saanut innoituksensa tästä:Kapteeni Nemo ja Nautilus (tekijä: Jules Verne)
Captain Nemo is the fictional life story of one of Jules Verne's most memorable characters from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and The Mysterious Island. It covers his boyhood friendship with the dreamer, Jules Verne, adventures aboard sailing ships, battles with pirates, and survival on a mysterious deserted island. Each time he returns home to his beloved France, Captain Nemo shares the tales of his exploits with the struggling writer Verne. We follow Nemo's exploration of hidden caverns that lead to the center of the earth, travels across darkest Africa in a hydrogen balloon, and his imprisonment by an evil Ottoman caliph who commands the dark genius to construct a sub-marine boat, the Nautilus, in order to attack merchant ships that venture through the newly completed Suez Canal. Captain Nemo by Kevin J. Anderson is a novel expanding the background of the famous Captain Nemo, from Jules Verne’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and The Mysterious Island. Mr. Anderson is an award winning author, mostly known for his Star Wars novels and original sagas.
In France, 1840s, Jules Verne and his friends Andre Nemo and Caroline Aronnax dream of adventures and travels. While Caroline and Andre have their own adventures, Jules can only look from afar and write novels which are a re-telling of Nemos life.
I have heard of Kevin J. Anderson previously, I had a few guest posts done by Star Wars fans on my blog, and good word of mouth by friends. When a friend loaned me Captain Nemo by Kevin J. Anderson I was looking forward to finding out myself what the big hoopla is all about.
Right off the bat I could tell that this would be a good read. Like Verne’s books, each chapter is its own little adventure (Verne’s were serialized), full of excitement and good time. This book is the equivalent of a good pop-corn flick, full of fun, comedy, some romance, but no real underlying heavy literary themes meant to rock your world.
And that’s just fine.
I especially enjoyed two aspects of the book, literary mashups and literary hunt. Literary mashups are tricky and difficult to pull off. Combining per-existing literature to a new work of fiction can be undone quickly with even a bit of carelessness, however Mr. Anderson pulled it off. The other part, the literary hunt for Mr. Verne’s stories was especially enjoyable to me, Mr. Anderson weaved in some of Jules Verne’s most famous books as part of Nemo’s fictional biography which inspired his friend and budding author.
This was a really enjoyable story, the narrative reads like a biography and not a fictional tale, Mr. Anderson’s literary devices to pay homage to Jules Verne work very well. The story, written in a way which is reminiscent of the way Verne writes, works very well and is especially inspired. ( )
