Text introduction includes a brief, cursory explanation of Harlem renaissance with strong focus on social history of women. The bulk of the work, however, consists of brief but well written biographies of five (often)lesser known but important women of the period. Includes period photos and ads. Includes a brief glossary, timeline, additonal facts, and websites list. Epilogue is clunky and seems like an afterthought--Bessie Coleman has nothing to do with Harlem. Still, a very good social history and collective biography for elementary aged children for school reports or general information. Very little exists on this topic for elementary aged children ( ) ei arvosteluja | lisää arvostelu

In the 1920s and 1930s, New York City's community of Harlem was filled with creative work in literature, art, and music. At the heart of this cultural explosion were talented women who took their experiences of being black females and shaped them into meaningful careers as writers, artists, and musicians. Having been fortunate enough to pursue educational and career opportunities, the women of the Harlem Renaissance moved beyond more typical female roles of the time. Today, they are remembered and respected not only for their work but also for their ability to inspire. Kirjastojen kuvailuja ei löytynyt. |
