It has been decades since Leo Leo Gursky first surrendered his heart, then wrote a book about it--at the tender age of 10--and he's been in love with the same person ever since. Leo believes his book is lost to time, but what he doesn't know is, not only has it survived 60 years without him, it has also been an inspiration to others. Fourteen-year-old Alma was even named for a character from the book. When she realizes how deeply the story touched her lonely mother, she embarks upon a search for answers.… (lisätietoja)

1 star because i did make it to the end. 2nd star for George Guidall's narration. He is incredible. (years later, I can't even recall the other narrators though I see their names on the records)

The author is definitely talented but we are not a good mix. I didn't like the mystery. I didn't like being confused. If I'm still confused after the mystery is unraveled then I feel abandoned by the author. I won't trust her again. Also, I don't like unreliable narrators but I'd have to say this one didn't really change anything about the main story. The MC was kept company by a very well described person. They had conversations, they tapped on the building pipes to tell each other they were still alive, the imaginary one overdosed on pills once, one got water thrown in his face... But at the end of the book the MC admits to us that it was his greatest character. (MC was a writer). I will never read another book by her.

While reading thoughts:

I'm not appreciating the mystery of who wrote the book. In the beginning Leo is writing a book and we know he loves Alma and she leaves. He meets up with her and is dismissed when she has moved on. Then we learn about a solid copy of The History of Love being translated from Spanish and the author's name isn't Leo, I'm like okay Leo must of written a different book. Also the wife in the intro of this "solid copy" is talking about her husband And I'm like "Leo never talked about a wife so this can't be his book" etc... Now we are back to Leo and it's his bday and here comes a translated copy of The History of Love. And he says it's his story. Leo says the original was lost to a flood. The wife of the other author also says the original was lost in a flood. It's hard with an audiobook. I can't easily go back and look for dates but it's leaving me dissatisfied. I've read and heard it all comes together at the end but I can't say I enjoy trying to hang on while being confused.

Next complaint: Young Alma’s is introducing so much off topic items like extinction and surviving in the wilderness. I can’t handle all the additional bits of information that don’t seem relevant. It's in one ear and out the other and that is not what I want in a book.

I think the author is trying to create suspense but for me it is only causing confusion. (ok and some suspense)

Isn't there someway to hold a readers hand during time jumps? ytf is Leo in his dead son's house looking for the book? Found a spoiler regarding his son (why couldn't he use his real name) and now ... how did Leo know the book was there? Is that a time jump? We will eventually find out how Leo knows but for now we get to sit in our confusion? Seems like a book you need to read a second time once you have all the answers. That is if your not too pissed off by the end.

I'm flip floppy with the stars while reading. I was all 5 stars in the beginning with Leo. I was at 1 star at one point with my frustration over being confused. How can she do that to a reader. She could make that not happen. .... will see where it ends up star wise.

Travels and transcribes of the book as I understand it:

Leo writes it, in Yiddish, for Alma M.
He gives the manuscript to Zvi for safekeeping.
Zvi translates it into Spanish, changing all the names except Alma’s, and adding Leo’s obituary of Leo as an inexplicable postscript.
Zvi hides the original (buried, then locked away).
It’s published in Chile, under Zvi’s name.
David Singer buys a second-hand copy and gives – and inscribes – it to his wife. They name their daughter Alma.
Someone reads it to “Jacob Marcus” who later commissions Charlotte to translate it from Spanish to English.
After Isaac’s memorial, Leo gets a parcel addressed to him (Leo) containing the History of Love, in English (Bird had printed it out).
Leo had thought the only copy had been lost in a flood, as Rosa had told him in a letter.

If you get a little confused, like I did, about who is who in this meandering tale, stick with it. It's well worth it in the end. Lovely book. ( )

The writing and the content of this book are so interesting. This is at least the 2ndtime I've read it, and I still do not understand a lot of it, nor do I understand many of the metaphors. However, the book is quite touching. ( )

This book is the best book I have ever read and I have read a lot of books. I love how the author makes it seem as though she was letting you in on little secrets in the chapters. It was an amazing book. That’s all there is to say. ( )

Nicole Krauss's THE HISTORY OF LOVE (2005), is a complex, yet simple coming-of-age tale of young love, love foiled, love lost and more. Stretching from prewar Poland to today's New York City, the storyline can be quite confusing in the way its point of view keeps shifting between characters, but eventually the stories of fatherless fourteen year-old Alma Singer and lonely octogenarian Leo Gursky converge in the most heartbreakingly beautiful conclusion a reader could wish for. I thoroughly enjoyed this award-winning, much praised novel. Very highly recommended.

Beskrivelse:

A thought crossed his face in a language I didn’t understand.
It’s also true that sometimes people felt things and because there was no word for them, they went unmentioned.  The oldest emotion in the world may be that of being moved, but to describe it and just to name it – must have been like trying to catch something invisible.
Maybe this is how I'll go, in a fit of laughter, what could be better, laughing and crying, laughing and singing, laughing so as to forget that I am alone, that it is the end of my life, that death is waiting outside the door for me.
The truth was I'd given up waiting long ago. The moment had passed, the door between the lives we could have led and the lives we led had shut in our faces. Or better to say, in my face.
Once upon a time there was a boy who loved a girl, and her laughter was a question he wanted to spend his whole life answering.
