Still not sure this is a fair rating. I would definitely recommend this book to a middle schooler, but not to another adult - no matter how much they liked YA. ( )

Questo libro, per quanto con i toni leggeri e divertenti di un romanzo adatto ai più giovani, è un enorme e meritato calcio nel culo dei bianchi.

Vorrei finire qui la recensione perché a dire di più mi sembra di sminuire l’impatto emotivo che (su un bianco) può (o dovrebbe) avere questo romanzo, ispirato dalla vera storia della vita dell’autore, Sherman Alexie. C’è ancora troppa gente che è convinta che il privilegio dei bianchi non esista.

Lo so che sentirsi dare dei privilegiati o dei razzisti non è piacevole: per fortuna la nostra società si è evoluta abbastanza da connotare negativamente queste due parole (anche se sulla seconda, negli ultimi tempi, inizio a nutrire dei dubbi…). Però è così: non perché siamo tutti orribili persone, ma perché siamo cresciuti in un mondo dove tutta una serie di comportamenti e abitudini sono considerati normali, anche se non dovrebbero esserlo affatto.

Allora, invece di prendercela con le persone di colore che ce lo fanno notare, bisognerebbe iniziare a fare autocritica per demolire tutto il razzismo interiorizzato, che è quello più pericoloso, visto che non siamo consapevoli di esserne “portatori sani”.

Quindi no, non vi dirò nient’altro di questo romanzo se non: procuratevelo, leggetelo e regalatelo, soprattutto ai giovani lettori. ( )

Fourteen-year-old Junior is a cartoonist and bookworm with a violent but protective best friend Rowdy. Despite his parents’ frequent lack of gas money (they’re a “poor-ass family”), racism at school and many crushing deaths at home, he manages the year. Rowdy rejects him, feeling betrayed, and their competing basketball teams take on mammoth symbolic proportions. The reservation’s poverty and desolate alcoholism offer early mortality and broken dreams, but Junior’s knowledge that he must leave is rooted in love and respect for his family and the Spokane tribe. He also realizes how many other tribes he has, from “the tribe of boys who really miss . . . their best friends” to “the tribe of tortilla chips-and-salsa lovers.”
