Frontier adventure in hudson's bay, with good personal drama ( ) This book is a roaring action adventure set in 18th century Rupert's Land (what is known today as Canada). While the plot may follow the basic good guys vs. bad guys storyline, Northwest Passage is anything but common. Chantler creates characters, likable and otherwise, that I found myself interested and emotionally invested in. The art is truly fantastic and goes hand in hand with the swashbuckling tone of the story. Another bonus for me were the annotations at the back of the book, where Chantler talks about the history behind the book, along with his thoughts on the series' concept and art. While this is an easy recommendation to any historical fiction, action adventure, or graphic novel fans, I'd especially recommend the book to anyone who is hesitant about getting into "comics". This one might surprise you with its thoughtful storyline, well-developed characters, and expressive art. The cover of the book caught my eye at my local comic book store. I enjoyed the story, which, at least for me, is original and interesting, as I have read no books about Canadian history. As for the artwork, I like it very much (otherwise I would not have bought the book) and think Chantler does an excellent job of using it to tell the story. On the surface the story is a pretty straightforward action adventure about Charles Lord and his nemesis, Guerin Montglave. Almost like a standard super-hero comic book, the villain defeats the hero, but in the end the hero returns to vanquish the villain. However, as Chantler explains in the annotations, there is far more to the story than that. Which brings me to the annotations, which I found to be easy and fun to read and quite helpful in increasing my understanding of the story itself. I found them to be interesting when describing the writing and drawing process of the story and the creation of the characters and how they developed. When they were about the historical background of the story I found them enlightening, as they taught me a little about the history of Canada. näyttää 3/3
With its strong pacing, clear and impressive design, faithful portrayals of all the cultures involved in this battle, and exploration of what it means to be civilized, Northwest Passage is a modern classic. Kuuluu näihin sarjoihinSisältää nämä:
