Jan Fabel, head of Hamburg, Germany's murder squad gets caught up in the search and investigation of the serial killer "The Hamburg Hairdresser". The killer takes his victim's scalps off, dyes them red and leaves them at the crime scene to taunt the police. This criminal gets very close to taking out his investigator during the case. Another great novel by C. Russell. He does a fine job of bringing in old characters, continual development of his supporting characters and managing to make the protagonist more likeable as the series grows. I really like this series and enjoy learning about some history of Hamburg and Germany. My only regret is how hard it is for me to find these books/this series in the states. Eternal by Craig Russell is the third book in his series featuring Jan Fabel, who heads up the Murder Commission of Hamburg, Germany. This time out, he and his team are investigating a series of murders where the victims are prominent people who are found with their throats cut and their detached scalps died red and displayed close by. The team knows if they can discover the link between the victims, they would stand a chance of catching this killer. These books are very well done with lots of police procedural details. Jan’s home life is also a big part of the story and, from the first book, we have been following his relationships with the women in his life. Throughout this book, Jan is dealing with the idea of moving in with his girlfriend, but although there are lots of pluses, he is having trouble with the idea of selling his small apartment that he loves and thinks of as his safe place. The various members of his team also play a big part, and their individual storylines continue from book to book,. My only problem with this particular book is that once the police narrowed in on the suspect, a simple computer enquiry gave them their answer. If it was that easy, then I am sure the proposed victims, who knew they were been targeted and by who, would have followed the same simple avenue that lead to the killers’ current identity. I have followed this series from the beginning, and enough questions were left at the end of this book that I want to read on and find out what is going to happen next.
