 At its heart, then, this book retains a value found only in the rarest scholarly works, a devotional value that comes by closely engaging its wisdom, not to calm the troubled soul but to trouble our ordinary ways. I found nothing significantly new in these essays, and they all relate markedly to B.'s personal context, but together they have a coherence and they demonstrate very effectively the power of the Bible to challenge contemporary societies. Not everyone will appreciate B.'s approach to either the Bible or discipleship. The way he weaves politics and exegesis together will disturb those who do not share his political presuppositions. For B., however, this is all part of a deep theological reading of the Bible. We can shape the world as we think it ought to be, but we cannot truthfully conclude that the results are what God wants the world to be. God is the one in charge, not humans. These essays remind us ofthat truth over and over again.  This collection does, however, help make connections between the Biblical texts and their implications for modern society. Brueggemann builds a strong case that both redescribing and reunderstanding the text in a way that continues to have meaning in contemporary culture are crucial. The final essay in particular illustrates new and clear links between Biblical texts and the concerns facing modern American culture. Brueggemann understands the profound grip that modernity has on the West and the strategies of post-modernity that have been deployed to undermine it. As he thoughtfully and creatively dissects these assumptions in the light of the Bible he offers an approach to Biblical reflection that could be very significant to the life and witness of the non-Western church in the future.
