A professional football player as stereotypically selfish and vain as possible, finds out how he has allowed himself to be steered and manipulated when he is pursued by a young boy, and finds himself attracted to the boy's foster mother. The characters quickly invaded my heart, and I thought about this one more than once after it was done. This isn't the type of book I am into, but I really enjoyed the change of pace for me. Aaron Hill, Derrick Anderson and Megan Gunn were believable, strong characters. Kingsbury did a good job of demonstrating some problems with the foster care system, though I feel like she glossed over some of the positives and focused a lot on the worst case scenario statistics; appropriate, though, if you are trying to reach/scare an uninformed audience.
