“The Undulating Shadows” by D.C. Eastman is a suspenseful science-fiction thriller. The blurb starts out “Silent misery haunts the Scott residence at night...” With that we are introduce to the main protagonists, Justin Scott, Raven Mills and Albert Campbell. The story blends traditional science-fiction effects of time travel and incredible gadgets with suspense and some tame horror. The writing kept me guessing and also kept me reading until the end. I received a copy of this book from LibraryThing’s Early Reviewers program. ( )

The story revolves around a shadow that has been around for thousands of years, terrorising children in South Carolina, North Carolina, and California, appearing at night. There are various characters to follow with a change of perspectives in every chapter but the book is predominantly from Justin's point of view. The book is written in the present tense so readers read the narrative in real-time. A personal pleasant way to read since nothing in the future can be foreseen and readers learn what happens at the same time as the characters. This is a complex horror science-fiction story and not a casual read.

Very scary!

Maybe this is a horror story. Maybe a thriller. But then again perhaps it is a future-tech science fiction book. Perhaps it is all three.

With a great and convoluted plot I was thoroughly hooked on this book. I loved the characters and all the surprises as the plot twisted and turned.

Well worth a read. ( )

Friendship and loyalty play a large part in the telling of this tale. Intriguing characters and a positively terrifying plot keep the pages turning as the setting alternates between time periods and characters. There are some truly difficult moments, especially with the bullying, that readers are sure to find harrowing, but they lead to a denouement that readers simply won’t see coming. Readers who enjoy their science fiction with a bit of horror tossed in will find much to appreciate here.

Raven, Albert and Justin are the main characters of this sci-fi horror novel.
The switching between them can get confusing as every chapter changes the POV.
I found the first half the novel abit strange as you have no idea WHY these three are linked until further on in the book.
The idea/ storyline is good, interesting and well thought out but so much 'using big science words' comes off as trying to seem smart. There are pages of explanation of how things work, and it really slows down the story. The whole show dont tell advice needs to be employed here. Also many times things are described in the three different ways and just appeared to me that it was filler words. This novel has promise that a good editor could help fix. I hope the author keeps on producing new works, as the plot is clever, the characters themselves were well fleshed out and real. ( )
