The Hawk and the Hound, by Emily Fionn, was interesting. It has a Romeo and Juliet vibe. The love between the two protagonists happened very quickly and without a lot of reason. So parts didn't make a lot of sense. The rest of the story dealt with the succession of power within the witch community and a spirit that tries to usurp that power. The ending wasn't satisfying as there are too many unanswered questions. In essence, it's a cliffhanger ending. Cliffhanger endings have never been my favorite.

I received an early copy of this book through the Early Reviewers in The Library Thing. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Well damn! This book was an amazing rollercoaster!

I was completely hooked on the storyline and the main characters had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. I even enjoyed the cliffhanger at the end.

A fantasy world with enemy towns, the cliches found in it did not bother me at all since the whole plot was pretty well done. The characters are both pretty well-rounded and I did enjoy the whole debacle they have to go through.

It a definite yes in recommending this book, I will definitely follow this series! ( )

Enjoyable. Well worked out world in small town america, between two tribes with historical animosity, cut off from the mainstream US through the habit of their elders. A prodigal daughter returns home (one of the few to ever leave) on the news that her Granny is dying and the coven need her. But she's not that keen on family interests, and has a life in California. A chance car accident sees her in hospital in the wrong town but there's a friendly mechanic around to help her on her way, he's kind of cute too in the way of the outcast like herself.

Alternating between the two characters works well and we quickly establish the rules going on, Rayne has always had magic whereas it's not been so clear for Max our werewolf. Working out who's responsible and who's prepared to stand up and take action is never something to be taken lightly. Although this did conclude with everything resolved I believe the author intends to write more with these characters and I'm interested in seeing what she's intending.

This ARC had an odd epub formatting issue which broke the book at one chapter break, the pdf version was fine. ( )

This reads like a modern day Romeo and Juliet--just couldn't get into it. ( )
