Everybody knows somebody who is a heavy metal fan - fact! If you are already a fan, our hats off to you. If not, let Philip Kerr be your guide as he takes you back through his life and shows how metal has shaped and enhanced every bit. Diving into Heavy Metal! is a journey of discovery, beginning with Philip as a naive child who found himself transfixed by an incredible sound. There tends to be a misrepresentation of heavy metal fans as weird misfits, and many books and films lampoon the subject. Not so in Philip's book as he invites the reader into the story of a community of fans across the world joined by their love of this extraordinary music. Many aspects of metal are covered as Philip discovers them on his journey: heavy metal, thrash metal, glam metal and more. He'll show you some of the more major events in music history, take you to a Sabbat gig in Derby, to see Guns N' Roses in Manchester, to the Clash of the Titans at the Birmingham NEC, and to the artillery barrage otherwise known as Motörhead! He'll also shed light on some of the murkier parts of the scene as he delves into the world of death metal. Whether you're a long-time fan, a recent initiate or a complete newbie, Diving into Heavy Metal! has something for everyone. And while the narrative bursts with humour and passion, it's also above all an honest look at this music that so many fans centre their lives around and without which, Philip says, he isn't sure where he'd be!… (lisätietoja)

Diving Into Heavy Metal by Philip Kerr is both a personal journey into the music and a nostalgic glimpse into the history of a genre.

One of the things that makes this such an interesting book is the relatability of Kerr's journey, even if your journey wasn't into heavy metal. Very few people who love a genre of music fell into that love directly, they started with other things that held the seeds of future love, and as they accumulated, and focused, they found that specific thing they love. From Good Vibrations to actual heavy metal, we watch, and for many of us relive, the discovery of a beloved genre.

I found myself thinking back to events in my life that had the same effect on me as a story in the book had on Kerr. I think many readers will do the same. Because I actually grew up with the music as compared to going back to pick up things that happened before I was born, this was a different journey for me. But seeing many of the same acts he did in concert, as well as many he didn't, I was able to both enjoy his journey of discovery while reliving my own.

The playlists at the end of each chapter were fun, I like books that make themselves more than just the written word. I tend to look up things to supplement most books so when a writer makes that easier and more integral to the book, I am appreciative.

Highly recommended for not only music and heavy metal lovers but those who like to read memoir(ish) takes on culture. This is both entertaining and informative.
