Since then I have taught it as part of the middle school curriculum, most recently, this year. The play presents a rather hokey, simplified, sentimentalized picture of Anne and much of it does not hold up to actual accounts from Miep Gies and from the diary itself. Per the suggestion of the Core Curriculum, I taught it this year as part of the Holocaust unit for 7th grade. The main reason I used it was it was we had a set available, and funding is tight. However, it is seriously inadequate for this purpose. In the future I will use excerpts from the diary, Night, other 1st hand accounts and a fiction work such as The Book Thief or Milkweed. That said the students enjoy the play. As a teen I performed the role of Anne in this play. Since then I have taught it as part of the middle school curriculum, most recently, this year. Her family went into hiding when her sister, Margot, got a telegram telling her to report to the train station. Anne and Margot’s father had been preparing a place for them in an attic above his company in Amsterdam. One of Otto Frank, Anne’s father’s, employees, Miep Gies, helped them get food and other items. They had another family that was staying with them and a dentist as well. The family that was staying with the Franks had a son named Peter who Anne had a thing for. Their lives were torn apart when they were found in the attic. This book helped me understand a teenage girl who lived and died during the time of World War II. Anne must have been and extremely strong person to have to entertain herself for those few years that her family was in hiding. She was also sent to a concentration camp where she had no clue what the Nazis were going to do with her or her friends and family. It was sad to me that the whole group all ended up dying except for Anne’s father. Otto Frank must have also been a mentally strong man to have his friends and family pass away and then publish his daughter’s diary. I think Anne and I are similar in ways. Anne was kind of the dreamer and the joker in her family. People should read this book to help them think about what they have and why they should be thankful for it. ei arvosteluja | lisää arvostelu
