Four women from Haiti, St. Thomas, and Guam meet at a college counseling session for first-year students and learn they have a shared history of abuse. Dubbing themselves the "island sisters," their unyielding friendship is their touchstone across oceans, through labyrinths of forced marriages and violent men, motherhood, and their dreams of freedom.Strong-willed and hot-headed Monique, quiet and romantic Cecilia, devout Lanei, and determined Ella are four friends who seem to makeup for what the other lacks. But no matter what is happening in their lives or the struggles they face, they share an unbreakable bond of friendship that serves as their anchor, helping and supporting each other through and through. To succeed, each woman must make choices that will challenge her long-held cultural beliefs, choices that will come with consequences, in the pursuit of her own individual freedom. An empowering narrative told from alternating perspectives of each friend, Micki Berthelot Morency has crafted four remarkable and hard-to-forget women whose fates are bound together by culture, by history, and most importantly, by a deep, irrevocable friendship. Heartfelt and deeply moving, The Island Sisters is an important story about hope and determination.… (lisätietoja)

The island Sisters follows four close friends as they meet in college and proceed through their lives. All of them face struggles and trauma both current and past. I loves the different cultures and perspectives. It was a rather depressing read though. Which is understandable since it tackles sensitive issues like domestic violence, neglect and sexual assault. The bond of these woman was heartwarming and I loved the banging of their bangle bracelets (you'll need to read it to understand). The novel was moving and emotional. ( )

This was an interesting novel on several levels. I appreciated the inclusion of women from several different cultures. I enjoyed reading about the different islands and food. I found myself researching recipes for some of the dishes mentioned. The focus on abuse was important and timely. As I was reading the book, I had difficulty understanding why the author had ALL 4 of these friends deal with significant abuse in their lives. 100% is a significant issue and overinflates the incidence of abuse-though I do note 4 is a small sample. I struggled with the end when one died. I understand that women do perish from abuse. Physical abuse leading to death in relationships is typically progressive in nature, and I was surprised about the specific character who died. Nevertheless, I found this to be a good read depicting women of color. I recommend. Thank you for ARC. ( )

A book which tells the story of four young women who met at university and formed an unbreakable bond of friendship, loyalty and support. All face hardship and various forms of abuse which if faced alone would have been soul and possibly life destroying; but with the unshakable bonds of their friendship, they face their fears and prove they can rise above their abusers.

A strong, very enjoyable, well written book. ( )

"The Island Sisters" is an engaging novel examining the lives of four friends. The women met during their first year of university, all living away from home (their islands) and needing to manage issues related to their upbringing. The story starts when two of the friends graduate and two, for various reasons, don't. The bonds of friendship prove invaluable as the women attempt to meet the expectations of their partners, parents, culture and religion, while trying to break free of all of those constraints in order to live their true lives. This is a wonderful tribute to the importance of friendship and love. The characters are believable and you find yourself caught up in the drama of their individual lives. I found the references to the political corruption of Haiti particularly interesting. Well worth a look. ( )

Lanei, Ella, Cecilia and Monique met in college. Best friends they are all affected by abuse.
This is an amazing book! The author took great lengths in developing these characters. You will love the relationships between these women and you will be heartbroken also.
Definitely read this book ( )
