The author's father was a Miami undercover detective that became a drug smuggler..He spent years in prison.This book was written from his detailed description of the many years he spent abusing drugs, alcohol and a very minimum relationship with his family. Sad story but easy to follow /read.. ( )

Lynn Walker knew her semi-estranged father had a story worth telling. A Miami cop turned drug smuggler, John Walker was never as close to his kids as he would have liked. A divorce, his prison sentence and a move to Ohio with their mother kept them further away.

Years later Lynn interviewed her father about his life and he told his story, warts and all. She has achieved the difficult – crafting a sympathetic character from a very flawed and potentially unlikeable individual. Except this is no fictional character. She details her father’s drug business, battles with addiction and subsequent health problems, and how it all prevented him from having a normal family life. All of it his own fault.

This is a gripping story, well-written, and you somehow come out at the end caring about John Walker despite his many, many failings. ( )

A true account about an undercover narcotics officer turned drug smuggler as written by his daughter. This book gives a glimpse into the life a drug smuggler, the addiction to drugs and money that keep them coming back for more. It was interesting to see how his actions affected his family, especially his children. The book read easily despite the tough subject matter. It kept my attention, and I did not want to put it down. ( )

Set in the southeastern US (mostly Miami) in the 70s and 80s, this is a well-written autobiographical account (written by his daughter) about a narcotics detective who becomes a drug-trafficker. Apparently, it is a slippery slope!
I found it very interesting to learn about the narrator’s lifestyle. And that it normalized for him, such that in his mind, it was acceptable to be doing lines of coke with his kids. His addiction was not just to cocaine, but to money and to the buzz that he got from getting away with his double life. And he seemed (weirdly) proud of his underworld connections and in his ability to successfully deceive people.
Despite the heavy subject matter, the book reads easily.
