This story would definitely be relatable to any kid with siblings! I think it does a good job inviting discussion about inclusion and without being too didactic, and I loved the use of sign language throughout the book. There's some nice back matter about Down syndrome included as well. ( )

A pretty true to life enactment of a slightly annoyed older sister making pains to include her little sister despite them being on completely different pages. It's a nice illustration of how both girls are feeling and it does resolve with a pretty bow. Big sister's friends appear more understanding than her for most of the story which isn't everyone's experience but could be normal for some families. ( )

Hide and Shh is a story about a Down’s Syndrome girl and her sister and her sister’s friends. They play hide and seek, but Dinah wants them to play a game with her that she is better at. Dinah eventually understands how to be quiet while hiding and her sister and friends eventually give Dinah’s game a try. It’s a sweet story. Dinah has sign language cards that she keeps showing throughout the story and readers learn the signs that Dinah has on her cards. My baby sister had Down’s syndrome. Sign language overcomes a communication barrier for downs kids. It’s an important part of understanding Down’s kids. The story is a bit simplistic in the relationship of downs siblings and their friends. It’s ok to acknowledge some resentment of having to include a pesky younger sibling all the time. The illustrations are not so great. I did not think Dinah looked like a downs child. I thought she looked tired. ( )

Hide and Shh! is an honest account of two siblings, one with Down Syndrome. The older sister shows how to include her sister in games and also shows that for a child it's not always easy. The story also shows some props to use with less verbal persons, ie: picture cards and ASL. It is a loving story of inclusion.

I'm a big fan of books about inclusion. This one is about 2 sisters, one with Down Syndrome, and including her in the neighborhood games. Sweet picture book with nice illustrations. It also teaches a few words in ASL. Inclusion is important...I wish more adults read these types of books!
