The second of Blyton's Barney mysteries. This time siblings Roger and Diana are at home for the holidays and are again joined by their orphaned cousin Snubby and his mad spaniel Looney. They are soon on the trail of a gang of thieves who specialise in stealing valuable historic documents from locked rooms in country houses. Once again they are reunited with circus boy Barney (and his monkey Miranda) who is working at a nearby fair and between them, and with some unwitting help from learned but naïve great uncle Robert solve the mystery. There's a few things jarring to modern sensibilities - corporal punishment, performing animals and villainous foreigners, however it's still a fun read. ( )
