The book contains helpful hints and testing exercises in an easy-to-grasp format. The book is organized in a clear, concise way that would enable a very busy student to focus on chunks of text in a brief span of time. The editorial team advises students to incorporate the words featured into dinner conversation-- a convenient way to build skill for a lifetime, and not just for an academic test. Although the purpose of this book is to 'teach to the test,' there appears to be a missing element in that regard. The book carries the common disclaimers that the work has not been endorsed by ETS and that the publishers have taken care to ensure accuracy -- but how have they determined which words were selected for the current edition? Who are the educational consultants involved in the production of this edition? Evidence-based practice is the norm in professional education, so this information should be disclosed to the readers. A strength of this book is its brevity; however it could be much improved by adding features that call students' attention to common pitfalls in vernacular usage. Highlighting words that are commonly misused or confused with other words would be welcome. For example, it would be helpful to include the contranym 'peruse,' explaining its unique status. Emphasizing exceptions to rules is highly valuable. In middle school language arts class, students learn how to decipher unfamiliar words by combining core elements derived from Latin and Greek; this heuristic is often effective for deducing the meaning of unfamiliar words. However, using that heuristic may not be as helpful for deciphering the word, 'impolitic.' Students would benefit from a distinction drawn between the words 'impolitic' and 'apolitical.' Likewise, drawing special attention to differences in the meaning of words "dilletante' and 'detente,' 'subsume' versus 'subvert' and other such confusing or frequently misused words would be a boon. Brief discussion of slang as it applies to specific words would be beneficial as well. Another needed feature is a 'grammar nod' that calls the student's attention to variations in form when words are pluralized or change tense. For example, the plural of the word 'ellipsis' is 'ellipses' -- not ellipsises! Furthermore, when a word is more commonly used as a noun in ordinary speech, yet it is being defined only as a verb, that distinction needs to be made clear to the reader. This edition includes the word 'pinion' as a verb, yet many American students may immediately recognize that word as a noun, along with the famous Bible verse from which it comes: "He will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; His faithfulness is a shield and buckler " (Psalm 91:4, ESV). Pinions in that context are a bird's flight feathers. The word 'pinion' also has specific meaning as a noun in the context of machinery and metal-working. Although there are conceptual gaps and much room for improvement in this book, it is still a sufficient resource for getting started on GRE prep. Students should regard this book just as a starting point, as an outline from which to work, where they can then go beyond this resource to learn more about these words. näyttää 5/5 ei arvosteluja | lisää arvostelu
