Until it was pulled down the Walled City was Hong Kong's most foreboding territory. It was a lawless place, dominated by the Triads, and which the police hesitated to enter. Strangers were unwelcome. Drug smuggling and heroin addiction flourished. A place of prostitution and pornography, extortion and fear. When Jackie Pullinger set out from England she had no idea that God was calling her to the Walled City. Yet, as she spoke of Jesus Christ, brutal Triad gangsters were converted, prostitutes quit, and Jackie discovered a new treatment for drug addiction: baptism in the Holy Spirit. This new edition marks the 21st anniversary of this phenomenal bestseller, which has sold more than a quarter of a million copies around the world.… (lisätietoja)

Inside Hong Kong was the infamous Walled City. Strangers were not welcome there. Police hesitated to enter. It was a haven of filth, crime, and sin. Prostitution, pornography, and drug addiction flourished. Jackie Pullinger had grown up believing that if she put her trust in God, He would lead her. When she was twenty years old, God called her to the Walled City. She obeyed. And as she spoke of Jesus Christ, brutal hoods were converted, prostitutes retired from their trade, and heroin junkies found new power that freed them from the bondage of drug addiction. Hundreds discovered new life in Christ. Chasing the Dragon tells the whole amazing story exactly as it happened. Equally amazing has been the reach of this ministry, now detailed in this updated and revised edition. From Hong Kong to the Philippines, Thailand, and beyond, the ministry that started with Jackie and her friends taking people in to live and care for them has continued and developed to form the present St. Stephen's Society. Readers will be inspired by this tale of trust and loving like Jesus.

Such incredible stories about what simple faith in Jesus can do. Sometimes slightly graphic, because the situations involved in many of those stories are definitely rough ones. Pullinger has a personality and therefore an autobiographical tone dissimilar to my usual preference, but I still found myself pulled along and really challenged in my own walk with God, to believe for what He can do today. And that's why I read this book, so I find myself really satisfied with this book. ( )

The incredible story of one woman who went to Hong Kong and reached out to drug addicts in the Walled City there! ( )

This is a life-changing book. I didn't think it was particularly good until I got past the first fifteen chapters, which were straight-forward, one-dimensional chronological accounts of the author's work in the former Kowloon Walled-City. Then sixteen and seventeen came and they were in a league of their own.

Certainly not everyone's cup of tea. But for anyone curious about a literally and metaphorically dark chapter of Hong Kong, do give this one a try. It's not a book to be taken lightly. ( )

On the one hand, this isn't brilliantly written, it sometimes feels a little disjointed and, particularly in the update chapters of the new edition, unevenly paced. On the much more important hand though, this is a startlingly vivid depiction of the way God has worked in a really dark place to bring light. It left me feeling grateful that we have a God who can overcome all and heal all. It also prompted questions about why we don't see these kind of miracles everywhere. A bit like the elder brother in the parable of the prodigal son, I wanted to know why I don't see this kind of party going on for me. Having thought about it a bit more, I think that this book does show that part of the answer is that Western Christians aren't as good at living in the reality of our inheritance, and also that we aren't good at recognising the depths from which we have been rescued.
