"The Iron Flute" was one of the first collections of koans to be published in the west. In it, "author" Nyogen translates the original Japanese text as well as later commentaries by Genro and Fugai, and adds his own observations on the koans. The translation is solid and surprisingly lacking in bells and whistles, and although Senzaki opted to go with Wade-Giles transliterations of all the proper names, he did include Japanese-Chinese-kanji and Chinese-Japanese-kanji name indices in the back that almost justify the cost of the book in and of themselves. This is a collection of 100 koans from 18th century Japan, compiled by Genro in 1783. Commentaries are added by his student Fugai, and updated by the 20th century Rinzai monk Nyogen Senzaki (1876-1958). Steve Hagen provides a very helpful introduction to this koan collection, and Nyogen Senzaki's commentary is excellent. The audiobook version is read with understanding by Ken McLeod. This abridged version contains 74 of the original 100 cases. näyttää 4/4 ei arvosteluja | lisää arvostelu

Koans are the intellectually unsolvable problem-riddles at the core of the Rinzai tradition of Zen Buddhism, perhaps the most well-known one being ""what is the sound of one hand clapping."" Though widely recognized, most koan remain narrowly understood. In this new edition of The Iron Flute, one hundred of the most challenging and enlightening koan from the Chinese Chan (Zen) patriarchs of the Tang and Sung dynasties are presented, along with commentary from the great Zen masters Genro, Fugai, and Nyogen, and an in-depth biography of author Nyogen Senzaki (1876-1958), a pioneer in bringi.
