Summary:
Swim Team is about a young girl, Bree, who moves to a new school and has to join the swim team because it is the only elective that is left. The challenge is she does not know how to swim! With some support from her neighbor and friends she is able to learn to swim and they are able to compete against the rival school, Holyoke Prep. Will they be able to beat the prestigious school?

Thoughts:
Graphic novels are a genre I am growing to love. Personally, it is not a go to genre to read, but the last few I have read I have enjoyed. I know my students love them! It would be a book that would connect with many different readers touching on the topics of swimming, friendship challenges, cultural barriers, family dynamics, and overcoming obstacles. It would also be attainable to many different readers to read the text since the high visual support.

I liked the way the author used some modern phrases and actions with the characters. Using terms like “Bet” when the middle schoolers are talking to each other. The modern slang will be approachable for many middle grade readers. ( )

Liked the characters, history lesson, and middle school setting. Will recommend this book to kids who like contemporary fiction, books about friends, middle school, sports. Liked how Bree over came her anxiety about swimming and how the author/illustrator depicted her inner thoughts. ( )

Loved this! Cute artwork, relatable, and informative. The little team of swimmers was fun and felt like kids.

I adore how this delved a little bit into why “some” Black people in America did not swim/didn’t know how to swim historically. Short answer: segregation. I think kids will root for Clara after seeing her progression throughout the story.

Anywho, this is what my soul craves. More graphic novels and comics with Black leads. The shoutouts to Soul food and West Indian food warmed my heart.

SN: I think it’s so fun that the author’s last name is Christmas. ( )

Representation: Black characters
Trigger warnings: Near-death experience, racism, bullying, anxiety
Score: Six and a half points out of ten.
Problematic would be the best way to describe this.
Here's a summary:
Problem One: Bree was forced to swim.
Problem Two: She almost died.
Problem Three: There is no way that she became that good of a swimmer within a year.

I first saw this 9 months back then I did in my library and not long after I finally read this. I had high expectations for this novel but despite enjoying this I had issues... I can't comprehend how it got awards but we have different tastes, where do I even begin? It starts with the main character called Bree who just moved to Florida and a new school and when she chose her elective there was only Swim 101 since the math elective was full but why, I already had a problem with this because it doesn't feel great for a person to be forced into doing something they don't like so why did this happen here. I was genuinely concerned for Bree because it looked like she had anxiety but for some reason, she didn't receive help for that and all Bree did was cope... and outpace it. Literally. Why not just go to the nearest mental health service?

Anyways Bree skips that class to try and avoid that to the point where she almost dies; the pacing was just too fast for me to wrap my head around. She swims eventually and a person called Ms. Etta contributed to this then Bree joins the team, hence the title but I didn't like how fast that was since it felt like she only learned that within a year, no it doesn't work like that! Swimming takes a while to perfect and not a short time. The characters... "sighs", they were a mixed bag, to say the least. Towards the end of the book Bree along with the rest of her team wins the state championship against another school called Holyoke Prep ending the book on a high note. ( )

Bree has to move from Brooklyn to Florida with her father, who has two new jobs there. When she arrives she must start in a new school and find new friends. Unable to get into the math club, Bree ends up in Swimming 101, which is a problem since she doesn't know how to swim. Skipping class and pretending to be sick doesn't work, so with the help of some new friends, Bree decides to try a different strategy.

Swim Team not only tells the story of Bree and her friends, it also develops themes of facing fears and trying new things. In addition, the graphic novel outlines the history of swimming in urban settings coupled with groundbreaking African Americans in swimming. There are a couple of subplots involving the relationship between Bree and her father as well as Bree's neighbor, Etta. While some of the swimming aspects are unrealistic, overall, Swim Team is an entertaining graphic novel with real history woven into the story. ( )
