I've read Stevenson's A Child's Garden of Versus before and this book contains a selection, which makes the poems actually more enjoyable. While these poems are very familiar to most everyone, they are not especially good poems--but the simple rhymes and rhythms are easy to remember. They are, though, written for children and easy to understand -- describing their world, fantasies, games, fears, days and nights. What becomes apparent is how very Victorian they are, as in these are upper class children, living in the age of Queen Victoria and Empire. These children understand that they are the kings/queens of their domain, and while wandering (in their imagination) to other lands, they are content at the thought that no one anywhere has it as good as they do, and foreign peoples must envy them. Smith's illustrations are beautiful and just as good as N.C. Wyeth's though limited to the world of the child, the garden and nannies. ( ) ei arvosteluja | lisää arvostelu
