Rhoda Broughton (1840-1920) wrote five short ghost stories published in 1873 as Tales for Christmas Eve. In 1879, this collection was re-published under the title Twilight Stories. Her distinction as a Victorian sensation writer of the gothic is transforming the seemingly ordinary into the enigmatic and sometimes frightening. They read like subtly suspenseful bedtime stories. Broughton explores the taboo (for her time) feminine dimensions of sexual morality and financial interest while engaging the reader in the psychology of her characters.
