 RosanaDR | Apr 15, 2021 |  I do not know what I can say in praise of this book that hasn’t already been uttered a thousand times before – and every pretty word, every hail of praise most deserved. Pride and Prejudice is absolutely brilliant and nothing short of a masterpiece – and I do not use that word lightly. It is so full of drama, on-point observations of human nature so eloquently and beautifully worded, hilarious social commentary with subtle (and not-so-subtle) sarcasm to go, likeable and un-likeable characters of equal amounts, positive character growth and development, plot twists you did not see coming yet makes sense and improves the story, mocking of the regency era polite society in all its silly propriety and decorum, and a protagonist that is, with all her strengths and flaws, nothing short of a queen – metaphorically, that is. There are but some minor critique. Aside from the first brilliant chapter, the story kicks off slowly. Some sentences are unnecessarily convoluted and there is a want of positive character development for many side-characters. Not that all characters need positive development, or any development. Indeed, we all do love to poke fun at the frivolous loon that is Mrs. Bennet, but it would’ve been nice to see some positive development, or at the very least some insight for Bingley, Jane, or even Lydia. (  ) CoderZebrine | Apr 11, 2021 | Yes, yes, yes. I have always avoided any books and TV shows based around this period of time and social class as it hasn't interested me. My knowledge therefore was very limited going into reading this. I had heard of Mr Darcey but couldn't tell you what book he was in or if he was a character we are meant to like or not. One of the things I aim to do this year with my reading was to tackle some more of the classics and more books written by women and this book meets both criteria. I wouldn't say this is an easy read but it wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. I needed to read it in silence as it required concentration and the short chapters really helped me as I could read for a bit and then take a short break. At first I didn't really see the fuss but the deeper I got into the book the more and more I wanted a happy ending for the characters. I enjoyed it so much it went straight on my 'to keep' bookshelf when I was finished, I imagine I will read this again in the future. I still don't care for the era or social class depicted in the book but the underlying story was more than sufficient to make me want to read more of Austen's work.  [Recensionen gäller en nyöversättning gjord av Gun-Britt Sundström] ...men ”Stolthet och fördom” är en glad roman, tack vare Elizabeth Bennets frejdiga humör och relativa frispråkighet. I Gun-Britt Sundströms nyöversättning ges gott om utrymme för tvetydigheten i hennes repliker, för skrattet som bubblar under ytan.  [Recensionen gäller en nyöversättning gjord av Gun-Britt Sundström] När jag läser Sundströms översättning blir det för första gången tydligt för mig hur skickligt Austen tryfferar romanen med små överdrifter, sarkasmer, nålstick av spydighet, utan att läsaren för den skull tappar engagemanget i intrigen. Humorn gäller särskilt gestaltningen av bokens karikatyrer, Elizabeths ytliga och giriga mamma mrs Bennet och den fjäskige och inbilske mr Collins, den släkting som aspirerar på att överta familjegodset. In Pride and Prejudice, Austen turned up the dial that controls the temperature of comedy, giving it some of the fever of what we would now call romance... For Elizabeth Bennet is the most frictionlessly adorable Heroine in the corpus – by some distance. And, as for the Hero, well, Miss Austen, for once in her short life, held nothing back: tall, dark, handsome, brooding, clever, noble, and profoundly rich...No reader can resist the brazen wishfulness of Pride and Prejudice, but it is clear from internal evidence alone that Austen never fully forgave herself for it... Pride and Prejudice suckers you. Amazingly – and, I believe, uniquely – it goes on suckering you. Even now, as I open the book, I feel the same tizzy of unsatisfied expectation, despite five or six rereadings. How can this be, when the genre itself guarantees consummation? The simple answer is that these lovers really are ‘made for each other’ – by their creator. They are constructed for each other: interlocked for wedlock. Their marriage has to be. Is there in literature a more perfect romantic male character? Good looking, caring, dignified and extremely rich? Well, we know that at the beginning of the book he is not all that but, of course, it was only our misguided female eyes that could not see through his reserved demeanor. And, yes, he was not nice all the time, but it was only out of an overprotective concern for his friend.
Then, love redeems it all… Love redeems both Male and Female characters, and they are able to see each other for who they truly are.
I know there is something cheesy about this story, but I still love it – and my teenage years are long gone.
Gosh, I still like to dream of thee, Mr. Darcy…
