The most famous American fighter pilot I never heard of--not Rickenbacker, Bong, Boyington, Yeager, McConnell, Olds--but the one who re-rewrote the book on tactics; developed the engineering models that lead to the F-15, F-16, F-18 & the A-10; and he was the one who developed the OODA Loop (Observe-Orient-Decide-Act)--not some psychologist, but a damned fighter pilot. Probably not much of a surprise that he was hated by the guys with stars on their shoulders. Good. Ornery guys getting their way can be prickly--especially when they are right. ( ![]() Not very deep on the actual output of Boyd's thinking & the theories themselves (E-M theory, Creation & Destruction, OODA loop / maneuver warfare, and more!) It's more a look into Boyd's life, work, leadership, institutional battles, and enduring impact... yet those alone are thoroughly interesting, and the story's well told, gripping throughout. It's hard to believe so many military idiots outright lie and destroy other (better) men to advance their own careers and provide US troops with non-operative equipment. The increasingly clandestine cape jobs and subterfuge required to simply do the right thing in the Pentagon is exhausting by the end of the book. Most of the good guys in the fight become casualties along the way. Some limp along, endlessly dogged and interfered with by the corrupt idiotic military establishment. It makes you want to be President or Secretary of Defense, simply to make 4, 3, 2, and 1 star general's heads roll. I lost a lot of respect for the Pentagon after reading this book. The good news is there are still a few good men out there like John Boyd and his acolytes that are willing to put their careers on the line for the right thing. So our taxpayers don't have their money grossly misspent. So our troops have the best equipment possible. In the end, Boyd and his acolytes can look themselves in the eye after a long life of studying war and how to best serve their country and know they did the right thing. One heck of a book about a military man who few know about but who influenced many. Fascinating and captivating, more so since having served in the army in the 90s. Venkatesh Rao's recommendation got me here. Great stuff, not just the OODA loop. Do Something vs. Be Somebody is trenchant and important. ei arvosteluja | lisää arvostelu
"John Boyd may be the most remarkable unsung hero in all of American military history. Some remember him as the greatest U.S. fighter pilot ever - the man who, in simulated air-to-air combat, defeated every challenger in less than forty seconds. Some recall him as the father of our country's most legendary fighter aircraft - the F-15 and F-16. Still others think of Boyd as the most influential military theorist since Sun Tzu. They know only half the story." "Boyd, more than any other person, saved fighter aviation from the predations of the Strategic Air Command. His manual of fighter tactics changed the way every air force in the world flies and fights. He discovered a physical theory that forever altered the way fighter planes were designed. Later in life, he developed a theory of military strategy that has been adopted throughout the world and even applied to business models for maximizing efficiency. And in one of the stories of modern military history, the Air Force fighter pilot taught the U.S. Marine Corps how to fight war on the ground. His ideas led to America's swift and decisive victory in the Gulf War and foretold the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001"--Jacket. No library descriptions found. |
