Sveta Dorosheva's illustrations (nib pen and ink, and watercolor) evoke the tone of Anne's story: somber and detailed, largely in black and white, with her famous plaid journal standing out in color. (The endpapers are this same plaid.)

The text is not too explicit, but leaves room for questions and discussion ("But one day, Anne stopped writing....It took three days for them to arrive at the worst place on Earth....Anne's father, Otto, was the only member of the family to survive the war").

Back matter includes four photos and a biography, which mentions Bergen-Belsen. ( )

Het derde boek in deze buitengewoon prachtige reeks. Wederom een schitterende parel aan de ketting, maar deze keer wel een erg zwarte. Wat niet geeft, het verhaal van Anne Frank is ook gitzwart. En toch.

De tekeningen van Dorosheva zijn volledig zwart-wit (in tegensteling tot de kleurrijke boekjes 1 en 2) behalve het geruite dagboek van Anne Frank. Dat is hetgene dat er telkens vrolijk uitspringt. Misschien ook omdat dat het enige mooie, positieve aan Anne’s verhaal is, het feit dat haar verhaal de oorlog wél heeft overleefd. Dankzij haar moed en kracht en vertrouwen, dankzij haar tomeloze schrijfdrift en –plezier hebben miljoenen lezers wereldwijd een beeld gekregen van wat we toen verloren hebben. Na haar dood is Anne’s wens toch nog in vervulling gegaan: ze is een echte schrijfster geworden. Mooi dat dit boek op een prachtige manier een ode brengt aan een klein meisje dat groots was, een voorbeeld voor ons allemaal.

Knap dat er in deze vrolijke, inspirerende reeks ook plaats is voor een verhaal dat minder mooi eindigt. Vegara is bezig aan een groots en inspirerend meesterwerk, deeltje bij deeltje maakt zij de wereld mooier en wijzer. Waarvoor dank! Geen enkel deeltje zou in uw kast mogen ontbreken. Lees dit boek zelf, lees het voor, deel het; werk mee aan een mooiere wereld. ( )

New in the Little People, Big Dreams series, discover the incredible life of Anne Frank. The text and illustrations show Anne as a child in Frankfurt until Hitler comes to power when she is four. Her family flees to Holland to start a new life. Unfortunately Hitler and the Nazis move into Holland and the family if forced into hiding. Anne receives a diary from her parents on her 13th birthday where she records the events in her life. The author, Isabel Sanchez Vegara has penned a child friendly biography that shows a young woman striving to achieve her dream to become an author. Her father publishes her diary after her death, thus making her dream come true. This book could be used to teach young children how to write a biography, show that it is important to have a dream and strive to achieve it as well as to introduce the horrors of WWII and the holocaust in a non-gory way. This could impart just enough information to get someone curious to investigate further. A good book for a school library. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book to read via netgalley. The rating, ideas and opinions are my own. 4.5 stars rounded up to 5 stars. ( )
