This is the story of Elagabalus, named after the Syrian Sun god and sky-stone. At thirteen years he led his army victoriously against the might of the Emperor of Rome. He was a god-like young man: strong, beautiful, charming, and beloved of his soldiers. Once established as Emperor though, his family sought to influence him, but he rejected them, and they, like the Senate, became his deadly enemies. Through the story of this unusual and outrageous man we see the background of third century AD Roman Empire - the power of family and dynastic ties, and the struggle between autocratic ruler and his advisers.… (lisätietoja)

Duggan's method meets a particularly happy situation here and the result is one of his best books. Heliogebalus, (b.205 r. 218 - 22), was the final member of the Severan dynasty of Roman Emperors, and a very odd young man indeed. We get to watch the reign dissolve, as the Roman establishment finds that if he is allowed to go on, the Empire's not going to change in their favour. So, they act. Duggan is the perfect writer for this set of circumstance. Hoping to start a movement here for a reprint by someone here...especially in this era of self-indulgent Trumpery at the top!

Mr. Duggan has a marvellously wry quality in his writing. Behind the straight face of his novel there is a disciplined hilarity which is tremendously appealing.
