I have said before “this is one of the best books I’ve read” but this is certainly the best book I’ve read in a very long time. I really wasn’t looking forward to it but it was the book for the March book club so I bought it and started reading it. I couldn’t put it down. I was so surprised by the depth of the book. The characters were so well written each with completely different personalities. The storyline moved along from person to person and kept your attention with a few twists and turns so that you didn’t want to put it down. Never would I think I would like a story about people making video games but I really enjoyed this book. It started out about two young people. Sam Masur and Sadie Green, in a hospital who meet and become life-long friends. Both of them were fans of video games and spent a lot of time at the hospital, him with an issue with his foot after an accident and Sadie since her sister had cancer, they spent a lot of time playing video games. They get in a tiff and don’t speak for years but then meet again and decide that since they both love video games they would create one together. From there the story goes on about their video game, their friendship, each other's lives, their lovers, family and other friends. During the years, they build a video gaming company that has success but they also go through losses that can never be replaced and tragedy that is hard to recover from. Sam and Sadie go through so much but their special love for each other is always there. This is a must read even if you think you aren’t a video gaming person. ( )

Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow has been on my Kindle for some time and has been showing up on lots of favorite book lists. I decided to give it a go both because it met my ROOT goal but also because I am working through the New Year Kindle Challenge and it was on the Goodreads Choice Awards list. Now I know why it is on those lists: I loved it. It was quirky and nostalgic and just as you thought it was getting predictable, it surprised you. I was not a harcore gamer but dabbled, playing Pac Man and Donkey Kong at the laundromat in college and Oregon Trail with my middle schoolers. Later I explored Second Life and other virtual worlds. I still build in Minecraft now and then as I find it very relaxing. Seeing how ideas for games develop with consideration for the goals of the creator and, ultimately, the player was fascinating.

But this was much more than just a novel about video games and their creators. Gabrielle Zevin weaves present and past together in real and virtual worlds through the experiences of two main characters--Sam and Sadie, both game designers and programmers--and their mutual friend Marx, the catalyst and collaborator. We watch Sam and Sadie move through their lives both together and apart, their shared love of games often clashing with their own belief and desires.

first 3/4 of the book is great, but it peters out towards the end. has an unsatisfying ambiguous ending that doesn't do justice to the relationships the book promises to develop. ( )

This book has several ups and downs. Each character is tragic, losing something dear and having an unclear resolution of anything gained in the loss. Sam and Sadie are complex in faults and their differences led to a satisfying ending.

To me, Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow is not about video games or work. It is about stories.

What Sadie and Sam do in the novel – through the guise of video game design – is create stories with and for each other. Unable to replay their past, as both the main characters grow older they re-interpret their shared history to play out their future with each other. Unwilling (or unable) to allow Sadie to leave his life, Sam uses the work of game design to try to keep her creating shared stories with him.

A relationship is just another form of world-building.

Her story begins around the turn of the century, when two college students, Samson Mazer (mathematics at Harvard) and Sadie Green (computer science at MIT), bump into each other at a train station. The pair haven’t spoken since childhood, when they met in the games room of a hospital

Gabrielle Zevin is (...) a Literary Gamer — in fact, she describes her devotion to the medium as “lifelong” — and in her delightful and absorbing new novel, “Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow,” Richard Powers’s “Galatea 2.2” and the stealth-action video game “Metal Gear Solid” stand uncontroversially side by side in the minds of her characters as foundational source texts.

Before Mazer invented himself as Mazer, he was Samson Mazer, and before he was Samson Mazer, he was Samson Masur--a change of two letters that transformed him from a nice, ostensibly Jewish boy to a Professional Builder of Worlds--and for most of his youth, he was Sam, S.A.M. on the hall of fame on his grandfather's Donkey Kong machine, but mainly Sam.
