"You've got questions: about space, time, gravity, and your odds of meeting your older self inside a wormhole. All the answers you need are right here. As a species, we may not agree on much, but one thing brings us all together: a need to know. We all wonder, and deep down we all have the same big questions. Why can't I travel back in time? Where did the universe come from? What's inside a black hole? Can I rearrange the particles in my cat and turn it into a dog? Physics professor Daniel Whiteson and scientist-turned-cartoonist Jorge Cham are experts at explaining science in ways we can all understand, in their books and on their popular podcast, Daniel and Jorge Explain the Universe. With their signature blend of humor and oh-now-I-get-it clarity, Daniel and Jorge offer short, accessible, and lighthearted answers to some of the most common, most outrageous and most profound questions about the universe they've received. This witty, entertaining, and fully illustrated book is an essential troubleshooting guide for the perplexing aspects of reality, big and small, from the invisible particles that make up your body to the identical version of you currently reading this exact sentence in the corner of some other galaxy. If the universe came with an FAQ, this would be it"--… (lisätietoja)

What is the nature of the universe?
The nature of the universe is a complex and mysterious subject that has puzzled scientists, philosophers, and theologians for centuries. Some theories suggest that the universe is infinite and eternal, while others propose that it had a beginning and will eventually come to an end. The current scientific consensus is that the universe began as a singularity (a point of infinite density and temperature) approximately 13.8 billion years ago, in an event known as the Big Bang. Since then, it has been expanding and evolving.

How did the universe come into being?
The origin of the universe is still a matter of scientific debate and investigation. The most widely accepted theory is the Big Bang theory, which proposes that the universe began as a singularity that rapidly expanded and cooled, eventually giving rise to the cosmos we observe today. Other theories, such as the steady state theory and the oscillating universe theory, have been proposed but have not gained widespread acceptance.

Is the universe infinite or finite?
It is currently unknown whether the universe is infinite or finite. Some scientists and philosophers believe that the universe is infinite and has always existed, while others propose that it had a beginning and will eventually come to an end. The current scientific consensus is that the universe began as a singularity approximately 13.8 billion years ago and has been expanding ever since. However, the ultimate size and shape of the universe is still a mystery.

What is the fate of the universe?
The ultimate fate of the universe is still a matter of debate and speculation. Some theories propose that the expansion of the universe will eventually slow down and reverse, leading to a contraction known as the Big Crunch. Others suggest that the expansion will continue indefinitely, resulting in a cold, dark future known as the Big Freeze. It is also possible that the universe could experience some other kind of event or transformation that is currently beyond our understanding.

What is the nature of dark matter and dark energy?
Dark matter and dark energy are mysterious substances that are thought to make up a significant portion of the universe. Dark matter is believed to be a form of matter that does not emit, absorb, or reflect light and is therefore invisible to telescopes and other instruments. It is thought to account for about 27% of the matter-energy content of the universe. Dark energy is an even more mysterious substance that is thought to be responsible for the observed acceleration of the expansion of the universe. It is believed to make up about 68% of the matter-energy content of the universe. Despite their importance, the nature of dark matter and dark energy is still not fully understood and is an active area of research in astronomy and physics. ( )

Some easy to understand discussions of questions about universe. ( )

I really liked their first book, this one a bit less so. Mostly because instead of an orderly progression through related subjects this was formatted to answer questions, so a bit of repetition and a little harder to put in order. Sort of like quantum mechanics when you're more used to classical physics? Same sense of humor though, so if you have these questions it is an enjoyable way to get them answered. ( )
