NORTHWEST WASHINGTON STATE, 1985

For years, Harris Hayes has taught his daughter, Aggie, the ways of the northern woods, where she sketches nests of wild birds as an antidote to sadness. Then her depressed, unpredictable mother forbids her to climb the trees that give her sanctuary and comfort. Angry, ten-year-old Aggie accidentally lights a tragic fire and flees downriver. She lands her boat near untamed forest, then hides among trees and creatures she believes are her only friendsâ??determined to remain undiscovered.

A search party gathers hours after Celia arrives at her grandmother's nearby farm. Hurting from her parents' breakup, she also plans to run. But when she joins the hunt for Aggie, she meets two irresistible young men who compel her to stay. One is autistic; the other, dangerous.

Ideal for fans of The Scent Keeper, Where the Crawdads Sing, and The Great Alone, Sugar Birds is a layered, riveting story set in the breathtaking natural worldâ??where characters encounter the mending power of forgiveness, for themselves and for those who have failed them.

Winner of multiple Earphones Awards and the prestigious Odyssey and Odyssey Honor Awards, Jayne Entwistle's narration has landed on Audiofile Magazine's list of Best Audiobooks of the Year.

This book captured me from the start. The two main characters were interesting people with many facets to their personalities. Their stories seem very dissimilar, but their lives cross to the benefit of both. Celia, who has been moved in with her grandmother, hopes to run away to get back to the life she had, before she felt abandoned by her father. She comes across as a very spoiled and self-centered young lady, a typical teenager with an attitude. She joins the search for Aggie, a young girl who is in hiding since she is connived that she started a fire that she believes has killed her parents. Aggie's survival skills were admirable and written in such a way as to be believable. She doesn't always think clearly about her situation, which makes her more believable as a 10-year old. I loved the ending. While this is labelled as Christian fiction, it really doesn't come across that way to a large degree.

This book was about how a young person could survive on her own through her father's teachings and her tenacity. It showed her strength and how misunderstandings played a role in her not returning home when she could have. It was a good book and I would recommend it.

I could hardly put this book down. Every chapter made you want to read the next. I'm aways one to want to read until a character is out of danger and it seemed like Celia and/or Aggie were always in danger. I liked that although the book is labeled as Christian fiction, it wasn't preachy, but had characters exploring their faith in their experiences. ( )

I received Sugar Birds by Cheryl Grey Bostrom as part of the Early Reviewers program. This is the story of Aggie, a young child who runs away to the wilderness after believing that she set a fire killing her patents. It is also the story of Celia, whose life is intertwined with Aggie’s brother and is hoping to find the missing Aggie, all while facing her own danger.

This was a wonderful story of survival, family, and forgiveness. A truly great read! ( )

Very well-written and believable work of two young women coming to age in different ways and the challenges they face. Not written as "chick lit" by any means, this father of three enjoyed the ruggedness of the book and the stark characterization of situations and people. ( )
