What I think you should know:

The Secret of the 14th Room by Rebecca Hemlock is a romantic suspense. It is set in a small town in Tennessee and centers around a historic house with hidden mysteries.

What I think about this book:

This book has everything it needs, a family feud, an inheritance and arson. Hemlock has created a very intriguing group of characters. Levi and Silas are cousins who can’t stand each other. Levi was raised by his Grandmother Dorothy and shared summers with his cousin Silas. While I was drawn to Levi, I did not like Silas and hate how his grandmother overlooked and excused his bad behavior. I enjoyed the history and mystery surrounding the story and would like to see what future mysteries are ahead in this storyline.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Celebrate Lit, this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own. ( )

Perhaps being a member of the local historical society while in high school created a desire to read books centered on history or historical societies for me. Or perhaps just the idea of this book created the desire to read this book, but either way, I have to say this book captured my attention. Levi Corbin’s grandmother and the one person he truly loved and loved him passed away. Now Levi returns home to claim his inheritance along only to find his cousin there as well.

Secrets, fires, unexpected events and more fill the pages of this book. Bella also adds a worthy dimension to this story as well. I found the plot believable, and the characters interesting. However, I give you fair warning, you may not want to read this book if you like stories that end neatly in one book. Because this book creates a desire to find out what comes next. So check out this book for yourself.

This book begins with the death of Dorothy Corbin, and I found myself falling in love with this woman who had yearned for a reconciliation between her two grandsons, Levi and Silas. Dorothy was the person who raised Levi after he was orphaned at age eight, so he assumed that he would inherit her house, until he heard the reading of her will. "My home is a historic treasure, and you BOTH can make something great of it and you’ll work together doing it, or you get nothing. It's for your own good. Family is all we have and we gotta keep it close." What? He had to share with someone who never showed any love toward his grandmother? She expected him and Silas to work together?

What follows is an intriguing story of greed, misunderstandings, old grudges, pent-up bitterness, and a mystery that will leave you guessing. Author Rebecca Hemlock weaves a tale that includes lessons from the past, people who aren't what they seem, and there's even a hint of romance between Levi and the estate lawyer, Abigail Wilson. Best of all, she shares a story of forgiveness and reconciliation.

I enjoy mysteries and Hemlock kept me guessing until the very end. There's also a cliffhanger ending, with unanswered questions that will hopefully be answered in the next book of the Granton House series. I recommend The Secret of the 14th Room to all who enjoy cozy mysteries.

I received an advanced reader copy of this book from the author via Celebrate Lit. There was no obligation to post a positive review. These are my own thoughts. ( )

I am pleasantly surprised at how much I liked this story. It is quite intriguing and kept me on my toes. I really liked Levi and how much he loved his grandmother. Coming back to town for her funeral was hard for him but I think seeing his cousin Silas was even harder. The author lets us see how different these two men are as they pick different paths in their lives.

Oh it was easy to dislike Silas instantly. He was only there to see what he had been left in the will. Their poor grandmother had hoped the two cousins would make amends but she didn’t get to see if it would happen. I thought it was very clever how the will was written that forced Levi and Silas to find a way to work together in order to inherit her house and possessions.

Although that was interesting I really liked the history behind the house. To be related to such an historical figure was very prestigious. The books that were discovered filled the pages with Civil War, and relatives that could be traced back many years. The author cleverly puts in a mysterious room that holds the key to a secret. This secret will cause one cousin to commit arson, almost kill someone and continue his hate for his cousin. Greed dies that to a person and Silas was all about gaining what he could at all cost.

To me the best part of the story is Silas. He is everything you would consider a sinner. He has hate, jealousy and pride all mixed in together that makes it hard to reach him. He thinks God doesn’t care and has given up on himself. The turning point for him is an unlikely person who wants to help. In that moment we witness the true meaning of helping someone that others have turned their back on. It is a journey that Silas will witness forgiveness, unconditional love , hope and the importance of family.

Now you may be wondering about the secret room. I couldn’t wait to find out where it was and what was waiting for someone to find. I almost felt like Pandora’s box was being opened. Oh that’s all I’m saying because this secret is worth reading. The author has left a cliffhanger which I wasn’t expecting. Now I anxiously wait to get my hands on the next book in the series to find out why a certain person is involved.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion. ( )

I had never read anything by Rebecca Hemlock before, but I had barely started Secret of the 14th Room when I knew I’d discovered a treasure.
From the first scene of Dorothy Corbin’s death to the epilogue, I was glued to the page, not willing to miss a single word. Why you ask? For starters, Hemlock has penned a cozy that takes place in small-town Tennessee, rife with a history dating to the Civil War. The author depicts the town so well I felt like I was the one walking the streets. For genealogy buffs, there are many ancestry references. For those who understand the value of family, the wonderful relationships between Levi Corbin and his grandmother are highlighted, as well as Abigail’s close relationship with her parents. For lovers of old houses and architecture? You’ll love this old town. Nefarious evildoers? Check. Faith? Smoothly integrated into the story. Action and twists abound. The best part is, there is a sequel coming! I. Can’t. Wait!
I received a copy of the book from the author and publisher through Celebrate Lit. I am voluntarily leaving my thoughts, which are solely my own. ( )
