If you want a better introduction to Spinoza I recommend: Spinoza, a Very Short Introduction. There is nothing on here that isn't covered in more depth over there. He was expelled from the Jewish community in an elaborate ceremony. Christians didn't care much for him either. Even in the very free and liberal Netherlands, he pushed the limits of society. His work on ethics was not published until after his death. He was apparently an outstanding lens grinder. I wish Strathern's concise surveys of philosophers and their context replaced a lot of readers in undergrad courses. (
