This is an extremely brief overview of Spinoza that is more of a biographical account rather than any deep exploration of his philosophy. To be honest I'm not sure what I expected before reading this. If you have a spare hour or so it might be worth quickly reading through, I found out that Spinoza made spiders fight to the death and that he liked to torture flies. If you want a better introduction to Spinoza I recommend: Spinoza, a Very Short Introduction. There is nothing on here that isn't covered in more depth over there. Another in the Audible Channels. This one was mostly a miss with me. The biography, however, was interesting. Spinoza managed to really irritate large sections of the population. He was expelled from the Jewish community in an elaborate ceremony. Christians didn't care much for him either. Even in the very free and liberal Netherlands, he pushed the limits of society. His work on ethics was not published until after his death. He was apparently an outstanding lens grinder. Wanted to learn a little about Spinoza, and after listening to this, I do know a LITTLE more. Not enough to make me want to become a follower, but I do admire how he managed to live basically a life of the mind, spurning fame (and the recognition that could have gotten him in big trouble) and having his most famous work published AFTER his death. The edict excommunicating him from Judaism is pretty memorable also, and this recording's rather humorous take on the whole incident as just making people more interested in Spinoza's ideas is pretty good. The narrator is great and the injections of humor almost all well done. All in all, it's a pleasant 90 minutes, but no light bulbs went off while I was listening. näyttää 5/5 ei arvosteluja | lisää arvostelu

Spinozaâ??s brilliant metaphysical system was derived neither from reality nor experience. Starting from basic assumptions, with a series of geometric proofs he built a universe which was also Godâ??one and the same thing, the classic example of pantheism. Although his system seems an oddity today, Spinozaâ??s conclusions are deeply in accord with modern thought, from science (the holistic ethics of todayâ??s ecologists) to politics (the idea that the state exists to protect the individual). Both Spinozaâ??s system and conclusions have compelling beauty unequaled in the history of philosophy. In Spinoza in 90 Minutes, Paul Strathern offers a concise, expert account of Spinozaâ??s life and ideas and explains their influence on manâ??s struggle to understand his existence in the world. The book also includes selections from Spinozaâ??s work, a brief list of suggested readings for those who wish to delve deeper, and chronologies that place Spinoza within his own age and in the broad Kirjastojen kuvailuja ei löytynyt. |

I wish Strathern's concise surveys of philosophers and their context replaced a lot of readers in undergrad courses. ( )
