I listened to this audiobook and I can't imagine enjoying it any other way. The voices were rich and varied and the acting was spot on. The background was dark and sinister, the characters were unabashedly, yummily, gray. We find out, more certainly, who the true monster(s) is/are until the very end. That, along with a pretty cliffy ending, was a great way to get the reader hooked for book #2. I wish it went on and on and on... the mark of a great book. But did I mention that ending?? It was painful to behold... it sort of just ended. There was finally some telling dialogue (a few different MCs POVs) and then nothing... unless you count the lady who thanks you for listening. Grrrrrrr

I highly recommend this book, especially the audiobook. There are two different actors for the multiple MC POVs with truly solid acting. BUT maybe wait until you have book #2 firmly in hand... unless you're a gluten for punishment or in the market for a frustratingly timed cliffy. AND even though I might be a bit sore over being declined nearly instantly when I requested the book from NetGalley, I must give credit where it is due... this book had me hooked from the very start and I truly had a good time in that world with these unforgettable characters.

~ Enjoy ( )

All of Us Villains is everywhere being compared to The Hunger Games, but I was strongly reminded of Tamsyn Muir's The Locked Tomb series while reading. Granted, the plot is much closer to The Hunger Games, but the depth of the characters and world-building made me think far more of Muir's work.

There's quite a bit of set up in the early chapters, but events pick up quickly and soon I was racing through the pages to see what happened next. I'm greatly looking forward to the next instalment.

Received via NetGalley. ( )

A lot of worldbuilding, maybe a bit too much: high magic has disappeared from most of the world, but in one town, seven families fight to control it every twenty years in a duel to the death among their teen champions. But someone revealed the secret of the contest, and now the government has sent overseers, though the curse itself can’t be interfered with. This year’s teens include an assortment of types, including at least one who’d like to destroy the whole thing if possible. It was brisk enough once you got all the data dumping out of the way; the contest starts in this book but does not finish. ( )

**received as an ARC from the publisher

I gave the Hunger Games a hard pass (both the books and the films) and couldn’t be bothered with the OG teen slaughter contest series, Japanese manga Battle Royale, so imagine my surprise when I gave this book a try and was immediately hooked. Apparently make it magic, make it goth, and I’m there (haha). Don’t get me wrong: the concept of a bunch of teeangers getting together to battle eachother to the death is still a deplorable plot device, but at least Foody and Herman gave their version a legitimate starting point that I was able to buy into - that of an ancient curse enacted to ensure the continuation and control over powerful magic resources. The lore behind their story is well built among the pocket community that is Ilvernath, artfully using ring-based spell- and cursework, playing up family legends, while paying homage to traditional magic lore, which brings the whole story to a crescendo as the young Champions begin to discover the secrets and magic tying the whole Blood Moon challenge together. Grounding the story is, of course, the group of Ilvernath’s teens chosen as Champions for their respective families, who provide a certain amount of realism for what could be a ridiculously frivolous narrative full of blood, gore, and violence. Sure, some of the Champions seem to fit perfectly into the “villain” category, but the authors do a solid job of giving the characters realistic motivations for their actions throughout the story, throwing in some solid emotional development (as expected with young protagonists), and keeping readers guessing as to who are the real villains throughout. The title really says it all, in my opinion, since all of the characters from Champions to citizens of Ilvernath have their moments of doubt (and fame); even we as readers become villains in our voluntary viewing of what is a horrific spectacle of potential death. But that’s the trick isn’t it? We can’t quite look away, even if we’re hoping for things to work out positively by the end of the novel... ( )

All of Us Villains is an exciting title to a thrilling dark YA fantasy book. Hunger Games with magic? I was totally interested in this idea, and the book didn’t disappoint me at all-one of the best books for this year. It was a quick, enjoyable read; I was on the edge of my seat many times, and I kept thinking about the story long after reading the book. Even with the long setup (which was suitable for understanding the world-building), the plot was engaging, and I don’t think it was boring at all. It gave me a solid base to know everything before the actual action happened.

The characters were exciting and layered and I could relate to them; the romance between them was fabulous! The story was beautifully written, and the description was vivid.

Overall, the book was highly entertaining, and it ended with a cliffhanger; I’m so eager to find out what will happens next. I highly recommend this book to everyone who likes dark fantasy books. ( )
