I have always known some bad things have been done in the name of science. But most know them in a periphery, a side view that may not be accurate. Mangala, bad scientist. Tuskegee, bad science, etc. But this book gives the readers a bit more in depth knowledge of these and many more events without overloading on any one topic. Plus the stories the author decided to tell were sometimes known, other times not, and some were downright shocking. Like figuring out how to kill someone so the body could be used for dissection. And I won’t even get into what Cleopatra did. Elizabeth Taylor never showed us that side of the classic beauty. This book was told in chronological order so that the reader could see and understand, that even now things are being done for the purpose of scientific advancement, that in a few years time may be considered unethical, or were unethical to start with but happened anyway. The biggest drawback to this book was the references. There were many times when the author would direct the reader to more information on a topic and it was almost always another of their books, or their podcast. They should have been directing readers to other works on the subject and not just what they did themselves. ( )

The Icepick Surgeon
By Sam Kean

This book is so fascinating! It has such incredible stories of how science has been used without any sort of morality or conscious. Many would be a war crime if preformed now! Some of these stories I had heard about before but this gives a lot more tidbits.
It starts with Cleopatra and her experiments on people and on up. Very eye opening! I was never bored that's for sure! If you like science and history or the bizarre, pick this up! I got this from my local library! ( )

In this book, Sam Kean examines what happens when people cross ethical and moral lines for scientific gain. Sometimes it’s relatively harmless and ultimately benefits the field, as in the catty feud between two American palaeontologists; but other times it’s darker and more sinister: grave-robbing, experimenting on prisoners, and performing lobotomies with the titular icepick in an effort to become the Henry Ford of lobotomies.

As always with a Sam Kean book, you’re going to get well-told stories that transition neatly from one chapter to another, and footnotes that are worth reading in and of themselves. This book features cross-references to his podcast, The Disappearing Spoon, which felt delightfully modern and multimedia, and links to his website, which has extra stories that didn’t make it into the book.

Of all the chapters in this book, my favourite might have been the future crimes chapter. The idea of murder in space made me think of Christopher Brookmyre’s novel Places in the Darkness, which takes this very setting and runs with it (or floats away with it, if the gravity has been turned off). I also liked the chapter about Gold and Fuchs, which ties back thematically to a previous Kean book, The Bastard Brigade (about the development of the atomic bomb).

This book is not for the faint of heart: one chapter is about animal cruelty, and the icepick surgeon chapter has a picture of an operation in progress that I had to cover with a post-it note, because eye things gross me out.

I do recommend this if you’re interested in the history of medicine or ethics. ( )

Conversationally written history of men who did good things in bad ways. I had not known about half of them and found the whole study fascinating. Well researched and thought provoking.
I do plan to add Sam Kean to my podcast list.
Narrator Ben Sullivan was comfortable enough with the material that it seemed like the author was presenting it!
I requested and received a temporary digital ARC of this book from Hachette Audio and Little, Brown and Company via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you! ( )
