The first story was a shock to begin with, but the stories after that had a sort of bittersweet, painfully elegant way about them. Each short story left me pondering for the moral and lesson of the story, and despite some of the stories being only around 20 pages long, I felt a deep connection to many of the characters. short stories - dark humor/horror stories from Korean author these are some dark stories! They typically would not be something I'd pick up, except that this book is getting some good buzz (shortlisted for the International Booker, apparently) and I am trying to read more international authors. BUT--I am enjoying it anyway, despite myself, though the bizarreness of the Korean horror genre is still something I am not sure I can fully embrace. Very readable, very dark, and yes there will be blood--and menses--not to mention some poop. Cursed Bunny is a collection of surreal, horrific short stories by Korean author Bora Chung with a theme of mother and womanhood. I like it, it reminds me of Her Body and Other Parties which is a similarly surreal and horrific collection of short stories with the theme of womanhood. Wow. Just wow. An amazing collection of writing - I loved them all but the last one, that is the one that was a knockout punch to the gut. Warning- not for the faint of heart and probably don't read these while eating lunch (especially the first one).
You may have been able to guess by the eerie-looking bunny presented in inverted colors on the cover that this tale is anything but light and happy. Bora Chung’s fascinating and unique short story collection, Cursed Bunny, displays the most disturbing truths about the nature of mankind through a fantastical yet realistic narrative. By including ten short stories, Chung is easily able to capture the reader’s full attention by making her audience feel disgusted and uncomfortable, yet highly intrigued and captivated. This slender beast of a book contains many themes that leave a lasting impression on the reader that may cause them to need a deep breath – and maybe even a drink – between stories. One reoccurring theme that comes across in many of Chung’s short stories is that of humanity’s innate inclination toward selfishness despite the repercussions it may have on other people. How can a species be so empathetic and psychopathic all at once? Could it be, that the step toward curing the human condition requires that we accept this cosmic curse? Palkinnot
Cursed Bunny is a genre-defying collection of short stories by Korean author Bora Chung. Blurring the lines between magical realism, horror, and science-fiction, Chung uses elements of the fantastic and surreal to address the very real horrors and cruelties of patriarchy and capitalism in modern society.
