Clara Fletcher’s family seems to see her as a gentle soul who cannot make her own decisions in life. Some of that stems from the fact that she is the only one of the Fletchers who hasn’t gone into a rage and railed at the English for what they did to her family. How could she do that when everyone else was so busy raging and railing. Somebody had to keep a cool head – so Clara buried her sorrow deep within her and went on with what had to be done. The fact that her brother, Drake, and her mother are now arguing over Clara’s future without ever asking Clara what she thinks is just finally the straw that broke the camel’s back. Clara decides she’ll go to Paisley Abbey and become a nun like the lovely one she helped to heal before.
Reid MacLeod is a warrior who has been tasked with delivering a message about an impending English attack on Dumbarton Castle. He is moving as quickly as possible because the earlier Lord Tavish gets the warning, the more people can be saved. However, as he passes near a dwelling, he smells smoke and hears the screams. He is instantly transported back to his childhood when the English trapped his family inside their cottage and burned it around them. He was the only one to survive. He couldn’t save his family – he was only seven – but he can save this one. As he quickly dispatches the English, he feels a deep burning pain in his back. Someone has thrown a dagger and stabbed him in the back.
Clara didn’t mean to injure a Scot. She thought the big, burly warrior was one of the English who were harming the family. As a gifted healer, she can’t leave him and takes him back to the cave in which she had spent the previous night. What she finds is worse than the wound she just inflicted on him. There is a seriously infected wound right beside the one she caused – and the warrior is fevered.
The warrior will not delay his mission – he cannot – so Clara insists on accompanying him along the way so she can tend his wounds. The journey will be filled with excitement, adventure, and peril, but along the way, love also happens. Can each of them put away their memories of the past and build a future together? Will they even survive the battle with the English?
This is an excellent book and I am so glad I have read it. Clara and Reid are wonderful characters who deserve their hard-won HEA. I hope you’ll give the book a try and will enjoy it as much as I did.
