I have read every Madeleine L'Engle novel and while I like some much better than others I enjoy all of them at least in part. This is not one of my favorite books by her but it is still quite good. Her writing style always engages me and I find at least one character in every one of her books that I can relate to in some way. I read this journal-like memoir in short bits over a period of a few weeks instead of reading it in large chunks and finishing it in a few hours or days. So maybe for that reason it had an authentic conversational feel to it, as if I was having a series of chats with an author/wife/mother/friend who had a lot of opinions and thoughts about failure, success, writing, faith, relationships, family, and life in a small town as well as living in New York City. I didn't agree with everything L'Engle declared as fact, nor did she explain everything as clearly as I would have liked. But her writing style was honest, and it was intriguing to grasp the sense of a real person, with a multitude of layers and complexity of thoughts and feelings. ei arvosteluja | lisää arvostelu

The beloved author of A Wrinkle in Time takes an introspective look at her life and muses on creativity in this memoir, the first of her Crosswicks Journals. Every so often I need OUT. . . . My special place is a small brook in a green glade, a circle of quiet from which there is no visible sign of human beings. . . . I sit there, dangling my legs and looking through the foliage at the sky reflected in the water, and things slowly come back into perspective. Set against the lush backdrop of Crosswicks, her family's farmhouse in rural Connecticut, this deeply personal memoir details Madeleine L'Engle's journey to find balance between her career as a Newbery Medal-winning author and her responsibilities as a wife, mother, teacher, and Christian. As she considers the roles that creativity, family, citizenship, and faith play in her life, L'Engle reveals the complexities behind the author whose works-honored with the National Book Award, the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award, and countless other prizes-have long been cherished by children and adults alike. Written in simple, profound, and often humorous prose, A Circle of Quiet is an insightful woman's elegant search for the meaning and purpose of her life. Kirjastojen kuvailuja ei löytynyt. |

It was interesting to read about her writing career and I wish she had devoted more of the book to that! Most of the book seemed very rambling and inconsequential. ( )
