Having read the first book in this series, I looked forward to reading the second book, Snuffed Out. Katrina, the principal character, along with her “boyfriend” Todd, along with their friends creates a tapestry that deserves studying. Katrina works at a college, while Todd works in law enforcement.

The story opens with a Regency Conference which Katrina helps organize and lecture at the college where she works. However, a murder soon takes place. Katrina listens well to those around her and shares that information with Todd.

I love how faith plays a major role in this story collection. It shares the power and mercy of God’s love without being pushy. The storyline moves along at a reasonable pace. I have to say reading this series was a good use of my time. I look forward to reading the next book in this series.

So check it out for yourself.

I received a complimentary copy of this book, but this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own. ( )

4.5 Stars

The characters in book one of Barbara Cornthwaite’s Wilkester Mysteries series became fictional friends by the end, so I was thrilled to get to spend some more time with them in Snuffed Out.

Katrina and Todd are so likable. Katrina is a good friend, but she has plenty of doubts when it goes to her romantic relationship. Even though it took a little while, I appreciated that her friends aren’t afraid to speak the truth to her and she and Todd have a conversation about their concerns and fears.

This book introduced some more college staff, and while there is a mystery to solve, the best part of this book is in how Katrina lives life with her faith, her friends, and with the new man in her life. And I am thrilled to know there is a third book in the series coming.

The Wilkester Mysteries is a series that I hope will continue and result in many volumes. As far as cozy mysteries go, I am rather picky and often find them too fluffy or dull, which is why I lean more toward the suspense genre. However, Barbara Cornthwaite has managed to create a cozy series that has light danger and thrills without inducing nightmares or putting readers to sleep. There is a near-perfect blend of mystery, romance, literature, and faith that both entertains and educates, along with some wry humor for good measure.

For those who have bemoaned the seeming dearth of witty literary fiction focused on historical literature (or at least the knowledge thereof), this series needs to go to the top of your to-read list! “Snuffed Out” is book two, and in my opinion it is necessary to read book one, “Brought to Book,” first. The characters remain consistent and although the crimes differ, the storyline itself continues, and in this case there is not enough backstory in the sequel to sufficiently understand who each person is and what is happening. Katrina narrates both stories in the first person, drawing readers directly into the mysteries and her personal life. My favorite character in the first book, I have to admit that I found Katrina annoying at times in this one, particularly when she begins comparing herself to Todd’s ex-wife. This does demonstrate her humanity, though, and her selflessness is evidenced by how she always takes care of those in need. She still quotes famous classic literature, with a fondness for the work of Jane Austen, applying it to life in unique ways.

Spiritual truths gently permeate the narrative, explaining the Gospel to characters—and readers—in brilliantly simple terms. Todd’s analysis of sin particularly stood out to me and is more relevant than ever during the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic: “Sin is dark. All sin is dark. Not just the violent and heart-breaking crimes. That stuff is what evil looks like with the mask off. Sins that don’t seem so bad—losing your temper, telling a white lie, gossiping—is the same dark evil, just with a mask on. But all of it is bad enough to separate us from God. All of it is why Jesus had to die on the cross.” Often enough, we are faced with overwhelming situations that make us feel as if we, like Katrina, are “a turtle walking through tar”, but thankfully, if we walk with the Lord, He gives us the strength and the courage to continue on as Paul exhorts us in Philippians 3:13. In “Snuffed Out,” fostering is again a significant theme, which is so important in and of itself as well as for the lessons it can teach. Consoling a new foster mom, Katrina tells her: “But just because something turns out to be difficult—or more difficult—than you thought it would be doesn’t mean you don’t deserve help or sympathy.” The same applies to our trials, too, and we have a Savior ready and waiting for us to call on Him!

Welcome back to the sleepy college town of Wilkester, where murder and mayhem lurk beneath the calm exterior. Cafeteria manager Travis Melford has been killed right during the Regency conference held at the college. Adjunct English professor Katrina Peters comes to the rescue of her friend, Dr. Susan Langton, accused of the murder.
Snuffed Out, #2 The Wilkester Mysteries by Barbara Cornthwaite, is a fun cozy mystery plus.
The plus stands for a strong faith emphasis with a clear gospel message. It also represents the fact that fostering is a side subject well-explored and truthfully presented. You will feel deeply for Kim and Ed and Becky, all foster parents, as well as the children they seek to nurture.
For me, a good cozy has romance. Snuffed Out does and it’s enlightening to see Katrina and detective Todd Mason’s relationship move so slowly and discover the maddening unknowns about that by the novel’s end.
Occasional humor had me bursting out in laughter at various points. I am more than ready for my next visit to Wilkester.

Notable Quotables:

”...But time is moving so slowly. Like a turtle walking through tar.”

”...your problem is that you’re trying to face situations right now that God isn’t asking you to face.” ( )

This is the second book in the series and I am really enjoying the writing style of the author. She mixes faith, history and mystery into a book that is fun to read. The characters are good and I loved reading about Katrina and Todd. I found it interesting that Todd wanted to take their relationship slow and you can feel at times that Katrina is wondering if they will ever move forward. It is something to be attentive of throughout the story.

Now the murder was expected in the book, but who the victim was I was not prepared for. Everyone is getting ready for lectures and exhibits for The Regency Conference. The author shines as she gives historic facts about this time period. I almost forgot about the murder because I was so intrigued by the Regency period. My head did do a double take as we find out that someone on staff at the college could be a suspect for murder. The suspense builds as a list of suspects start piling up.

I did like that the author gave us a more in-depth look at Katrina. She is having problems believing Todd loves her. Her fear is starting to take over and it may push Todd away. It was an interesting side story and I really enjoyed how she decides to share her fears with Todd. Oh Todd is such a good man and he is going to make someone a great husband some day.

I was surprised at how the murder was solved and who the killer was. The author does a great job of leaving a subtle trail but I seemed to not catch on as fast as I should have. I hope you are ready for a tour through literature, history and a well defined murder mystery. I was thrilled by the ending and hope we get another book in the series,

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion. ( )
