I enjoyed this book! I didn’t really know what to think of this book when I decided to pick it up. It is described as a YA thriller so I thought it would be a good bet for me. I found this book to be both thrilling and thought-provoking. This was quite an impressive debut novel!

Chiamaka and Devon are planning on having a great senior year. Chiamaka rules the school and knows that she is well on her way to Yale next year then med school. Devon is busy working on his music with dreams of making it into Julliard. Things look great until Aces strike. Chiamaka and Devon are not in the same circle and don’t seem to have too much in common but they are both clearly being targeted by Aces. Someone who is calling themselves Aces is sending text messages to everyone at the school which reveals Devon’s and Chiamaka’s deepest and darkest secrets.

I was not only curious about who Aces might be and what their motivation was but also couldn’t help but wonder what might be revealed next about Chiamaka and Devon. As pieces of the puzzle started to come together, I was even more confused until everything clicked and then I was angry on their behalf. Devon and Chiamaka proved to be very resilient characters and I thought that they should a lot of growth during this story.

I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this book to others. This is one of those books that is best to go in as blindly as possible. I am so glad that I decided to pick it up and hope to read more of this author’s work in the future.

I received a digital review copy of this book from Feiwel & Friends via NetGalley. ( )

Whew! This one was quite a ride! What started out as a private school bullying story turned into something so much more. Bullying rooted in racism? sexual orientation bias? The needle pointing at the potential bully oscillates between so many suspects, the suspense grows and grows and keeps you engaged. The main two characters past traumas are brought up and give you insight into their lives.

I'm all for a suspenseful thriller, but I really didn't enjoy seeing teens put in peril/putting themselves in peril. Painful. Just like in a slasher movie, I just wanted to help and yell: STOP, DON'T DO THAT:-)
But experiencing the horror of the teens' lives so easily being uprooted by outside forces is the lesson here. ( )

What if you look different from everyone else in your school, and you suddenly get the feeling they're secretly plotting against you? The author took her own nightmare scenario and turned it into a chilling story that will give you some serious trust issues.

Chiamaka and Devon knew they were the only two black students at their school, but it's the 21st century and they didn't think that some of their own friends, classmates, and maybe even teachers, would sabotage them due to racist motives. At first they assume they're paranoid, but eventually realize they can trust no one except each other until the culprit (or culprits?) is caught.

Ace of Spaces is great suspense story that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very last page (seriously!). On top of that, the author does an amazing job of conveying the fear and anxiety that can result from being black in an overwhelmingly white environment. Can't wait to see what's next from Faridah! This novel is terrifying. Easily one of the best thrillers I’ve ever read. Doubly so because I’m mortified that it could be true.

Ace of Spades follows two Black students – Devon and Chiamaka – through their senior year at Niveus Private Academy. Both are good students, both work hard to be where they are in life. Both are about to have terrible, horrible, unforgiveable things happen to them.

To talk too much about why I loved this book (as a read, I just feel like I need to separate that from “as a reality” because yikes) would be to give away all the plot twists and horrifying revelations. This is one of the things that make reviews for thrillers so frustratingly difficult to write! Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé has done an amazing job of setting up characters that are layered and deceitful, characters you care about, characters that you really, really love to hate. Our protagonists are also very different and also absolutely amazing. Their resilience astounds me and has grown my respect for the resilience of all Black people and the resiliency they need to exhibit daily.

This was a book that, despite how invested I was, I had to listen to in pieces. I was listening to Ace of Spades on the road one day and I had to turn it off because what was happening in the book was making me feel physically sick. It’s that emotionally investing. I can’t recommend enough that folks should pick this one up, but also know that there’s some pretty nauseating behavior in its pages.

Àbíké-Íyímídé’s debut sets high expectations. The writing is solid and gutting, the character development is out of this world, and there’s such a wide variety of twists that by the end of everything you’ll probably have lost all hope for the protagonists (at least, I did). I await her next book with eager anticipation.

If the hype about Ace of Spades hasn’t drawn you in yet… take this review as a sign that it’s time to pick it up and give it a read. It’s easily appealing to anyone from young adults to any age adult despite its private high school setting. Ace of Spades examines the very real evil that exists in the hearts of so many people in our world and the strength of those who succeed despite it. It’s an excellent book and it will hurt you in all the ways it should. ( )

i loved the synopsis for this book and was super interested in reading it! it centers around two black highschoolers in an all-white school, where the rich, elite, and powerful attend. it is their senior year, and the main girl character, chiamaka, has been head girl for all four. devon, on the other hand, is suddenly made a prefect and isn't sure how.

chiamaka has a perfect life on the outside, as she has top grades, a best friend, and a bright future instead of her. she wants to go premed at yale, her dream school, and will stop at nothing to get there. devon wants to pass the year under the radar and continue playing music.

unfortunately, neither of their plans work. the aces, an anonymous organization, sends texts to the entire student body that targets chiamaka and devon. they send pictures of private photos and dark secrets that they both worked hard to keep hidden.

chiamaka and devon can only trust each other, as they are the only ones being suspected. chiamaka is determined to get to the bottom of this and find who's been sabotaging her perfect senior year. together, they find clues and bring up possible suspects.

the mystery and suspense kept me intrigued and i finished the book really quickly. the book tackles important topics in today's society, such as racism, homophobia, and white supremacy. the author brings the topics in and we can really see the issues by reading from the character's povs.

overall, i really loved this book, especially chiamaka! she's not perfect, but she's strong and smart and doesn't let anything get in her way. the ending of the book really tied it all up, and it was great. i would recommend this book to anyone looking for a ya thriller! ( )
