Writer and performer on Late Night with Seth Meyers Amber Ruffin writes with her sister Lacey Lamar with humor and heart to share absurd anecdotes about everyday experiences of racism. Now a writer and performer on Late Night with Seth Meyers and host of The Amber Ruffin Show, Amber Ruffin lives in New York, where she is no one's First Black Friend and everyone is, as she puts it, "stark raving normal." But Amber's sister Lacey? She's still living in their home state of Nebraska, and trust us, you'll never believe what happened to Lacey. From racist donut shops to strangers putting their whole hand in her hair, from being mistaken for a prostitute to being mistaken for Harriet Tubman, Lacey is a lightning rod for hilariously ridiculous yet all-too-real anecdotes. She's the perfect mix of polite, beautiful, petite, and Black that apparently makes people think "I can say whatever I want to this woman." And now, Amber and Lacey share these entertainingly horrifying stories through their laugh-out-loud sisterly banter. Painfully relatable or shockingly eye-opening (depending on how often you have personally been followed by security at department stores), this book tackles modern-day racism with the perfect balance of levity and gravity.… (lisätietoja)

Outstanding. Racism is over! Just kidding, you'll still laugh until it hurts though. ( )

I laughed, shook my head, had many emotions and was entertained from start to finish.

I believed EVERYTHING that happened to Lacey...sadly. ( )

Racism isn't funny...this book is, though. Lacey lives in Nebraska and faces frighteningly frequent racism in the workplace and around town. Luckily for us readers, her sister Amber is a comedian. The two of them partnered to tell a hilarious version of the terrible experiences Lacey has had. I was heartbroken for Lacey. I also laughed out loud at the audacity of some of these people she has encountered. I want to emphasize: in the WORKPLACE. Definitely worth reading if you like a laugh alongside your social commentary. ( )

You may know Amber Ruffin from her appearances on Late Night with Seth Meyers or The Amber Ruffin Show. While she lives in culturally diverse New York City, her older sister Lacey lives in Nebraska. You’ll Never Believe What Happened to Lacey is a collection of racist incidents that Lacey has experienced living in the Midwest. It’s supposed to be a humorous take on these events but it mostly just made me mad and ask myself, “Why are people so stupid?” Most of these stories are about overt, unmistakable racism. People have no shame. I might have chuckled a few times but mostly I was rolling my eyes. And I’m sure Lacey has hundreds more stories that didn’t make it into the book. I understand why the stories try to be funny – it’s like if you don’t laugh, you’ll cry.

I think this book would be extremely helpful to people who think they aren’t racist but still commit micro-aggressions without even realizing it – like the woman in the grocery store who put her hand in Lacey’s afro. And since it’s marketed as a comedy book, your friends won’t be suspicious when you gift them a copy.

Even though I didn’t find it laugh-out-loud funny, I did find it to be an engaging read. I finished in one night, which is rare for me. Highly recommended. ( )

You should read this book.

It's funny. Seriously hilarious. Amber is an epic storyteller. She knows how to put an event into all the right words so it flow perfectly. Lacey's interjections double down on the hilariousness of the entire book.

Had someone explained the concept of a book that went back and forth like a conversation to me I would have thought it would be weird, but it works. It's so apparent they are sisters, and wrote this book together sharing laughs and tears as they recalled the stories. I loved it, and hope they do more projects together like this.

But also, this book is literally insane. The words that come out of real live peoples mouths, the people that were in the room and heard these words but watched on in silence, it's insane. You have to read it to believe it because there is no level of review that is going to get it across.

You'll enjoy this book no matter who you are. I think you should just read it. Take these stories to heart, and grow from them to be a more aware person. At work, at the store, where ever. Don't be the girl nodding alone with some hateful word vomit that flowed from someone's mouth.

It's 2022, we no longer need to accept "Oh, that's just grandma, she's a racist/bigot/whatever. lol" We now follow the "see something, say something policy" and call it out. ( )

This book is dedicated to Black mothers and fathers like James and Theresa Ruffin, who teach us how to deal with racism; to Black brothers and sisters like Chrystal, Angela, and Jimmy, who provide support; and to Black children like Imani, who hopefully have it easier than we did. And most of all, this book is dedicated to El DeBarge. You are truly the Rhythm of the Night.

Lacey used to have these Black history checks. Each check had a different Black hero on it. MLK, Rosa Parks, Frederick Douglass.
These are the stories we all have. If you know a Black person, odds are this has happened to them.
