An initially cool take on the "I see dead people" genre has Miko "Mieruko-chan" Yotsuya suddenly begin seeing monsters, demons, and spirits that are invisible to everyone else. The only way she can cope and keep from attracting their attention is to pretend she doesn't see them. And most of the book is just her seeing a new gross monster and ignoring it. Over and over. One search for a totem to ward them off doesn't really go anywhere, and then we're back to ignoring.

In addition to the repetition, there's some low-key fan service of the high school girls.

I was ready to two-star this and put it aside, but a cutting little twist at the end has me curious to see if the creator is actually ready to pick a direction for the story. ( )

When I first saw a snippet of the anime adaptation of this manga I was intrigued. I was hesitant when I first saw the book as I noticed the fanservice while flipping through the pages. However, after reading volume one I am hooked. The artstyle suits the cute characters as well as the creepy spirits. When Miko and Hana find a cat and are looking for people to adopt said cat, Miko sees the spirits behind two totally different people. The seemingly nice and handsome young man has some scary and dark spirits surrounding him, whereas the tougher-looking, delinquent guy is accompanied by gentle, light spirits that look like cats. Miko follows her gut and lets the delinquent adopt the cats. Turns out, he had lost someone dear to him as well as his cats so they were watching over him, making him a really good choice as the new owner of the stray cat. One can only wonder what the handsome young man would have done to the cat had he been the one to adopt it. I'm interested in seeing where this contrast of good vs. evil spirits will go as the series moves on. ( )
