Marko surfaces from a drug induced haze to find himself hidden from the world in a psychiatric ward. He is certain the 'Doctor' means to kill him, and he in turn has vengeful plans of his own. But how is it he came to stop taking his medication? Who can Marko trust and how much time does he have? Time enough to write it all down, his story of a coast to coast trip, and the earthquake which ripped his world apart. Suggested level: secondary. Kirjastojen kuvailuja ei löytynyt. |

is a NZ writer.
In 2002 Beckett wrote a psychological thriller Jolt
The book flicks back and forth between two narratives by the same narrator:
a) Marko finds himself in a psychiatric ward, where he’s secretly stopped talking his medication. We discover via his diary that he is convinced his doctor is trying to kill him and later decides to kill the doctor.
b) The other narrative relates something in the past – his gruelling school survival trip which turns to disaster after an earthquake and when Marko witnesses something he wishes he hadn’t.
At first the 2 narratives seem separate, but the reader gets more and more involved in each as dramatic tension builds up.
Throughout the book you ask yourself: Is Marko paranoid? Is the doctor really evil?
A relationship he develops with one of the girls on the school trip ends up saving his life. ( )
